Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 15, 2021 8:54 pm All the house plans I've looked at that feature an alfresco area seem to have it so that the alfresco connects with the house on two sides, and has two open sides. Our current plan has the rear of the house finishing in a straight line. The partner really wants an alfresco, so to do this, we'd have to start it from the rear of the house and extend it out so it'd be open on three sides. It would only run along half of the rear of the house - so would be roughly 5m wide by 4m deep. I'm worried that this will look a little odd. All the pictures I can find online, they seem to either connect on two sides, or run the entire width of the rear of the house. Also worried it will constantly have sun in there and therefore kind of defeat the purpose. Pretty sure I'm overthinking it, but if anyone has done this and can reassure me before we spend the money, it'd be appreciated! Re: Alfresco open on 3 sides? 2Sep 15, 2021 9:08 pm Why don't you put your plan up with north marked so we can see exactly what you have planned and possibly give some refinements. It's 6m wide and 3m deep, with the door in the middle. Tbh if I was building this house again, I'd make alfresco run the whole width of the house, or change the design to have it in the corner and open from two sides. The big issue with it is that there's nowhere to put outdoor furniture. If you put it in the middle, it's in the way when you walk out of the door, if you put it to the side it's open to weather. And even without the furniture rain gets in when it's windy. I'll find/make a picture tomorrow. Excuse my drawing!! There's no room for the alfresco to go anywhere else on the block. Was thinking we could get someone to build a privacy screen type thing, probably for the west side.
