Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 16, 2008 5:17 pm We're looking at building a rather long "ranch" style house, with an overall slab length of approx 42m...
We're in the early stages of budgeting, and looking at land cut and fill options etc, and as such would really like to understand what the slab detail will entail. Does anyone have a slab detail for a house greater than 40m? Obviously when the time comes, I have to have a slab/footing design completed but at this early stage I'm just trying to work through what our options are, how much concrete I'm going to need, what footings, and whether it will be more cost effective to go for a steel sub floor? I know very little about this subject, however I would have thought that for a 40 m slab versus a 20 m slab that was twice as big in the other dimension, the amount of footing and concrete would be about the same. However, I imagine you would need some control joints along the way since thats a lot of concrete that will want to shrink as time goes on and will want to expand and contract as the temperature changes. I hope you've got your long thin house running east west to allow good passive solar design. Both footing/beam size will be greater, and mesh sizes will also be greater because of the additional forces. The big question is how different. I have looked at the Australian standard for smaller slabs, but for anything over 32m an engineer is required...
And yep, a beautiful long East West, with the garage at the Western End, and a 6ft verandah surrounding the entire house. The rear of the house will face north, and catch the breeze coming up off the creek flats... I'm thinking a couple of ceiling fans are all that will be required! Electrical Engineer... Re: Long (<40m) slab design 5Oct 16, 2008 8:10 pm Just because you wish to seek the slab detail from someone who may have a similar dimension as yourself - that doesn't necessarily ensure that the footing design for what you propose is going to be at all similar. You need to seek an engineer... Re: Long (<40m) slab design 6Oct 16, 2008 8:39 pm Yep, and I will be at the construction stage, but for budgeting purposed, and working through the cost analysis of the various options I'd like to get a much better idea of what the slab will entail...
Any slab around 40m will do... I'll work through the various options from there. S or M class slabs are fairly similar, bigger dimensions on the reo and footing again, so it's easy enough to step up/down dependant on what someone can offer? Electrical Engineer... Although I am a big opponent of using waffle pod slabs over H2/P soils under any circumstances, in your case I would certainly opt in to keep piers under central… 1 2415 12 5316 Congratulations! Nice to put that to bed before christmas, now you can relax 3 7133 |
