Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 29, 2021 8:38 pm Hi, We are currently at frame stage and we've noticed there are huge number of holes/broken on lot of timber slats. I think it's reasonable to have them in one or two slats, however there's quite a lot of them especially with some where the edge is nailed to the other timber slat where it's broken and some with a big hole at the edges. Not sure if I'm able to use the right words to explain our issue but hopefully the pictures would make sense. If anyone had similar problem or if there are any experts that have this knowledge, would really appreciate if can throw some light on this. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅
Re: Holes in the timber slats at frame stage - photos attach 3Sep 05, 2021 10:02 pm Agree, there is timber shortage. However, that shouldn't mean builders can just use the situation to their benefit by getting low quality timber. I now learnt that the holes are called knots and these knots need to be of specific size, depth and location as per the building standards. Are there any building inspectors that can shed more light on this? I'm somehow still not convinced if not all, some of these large knots would not effect the structural integrity with the gusty winds in melbourne Re: Holes in the timber slats at frame stage - photos attach 4Sep 06, 2021 9:42 am Send the photos to the relevant building surveyor and ask them to be taken into account when they inspect the frame for compliance Foremost Building Expert in Australia, assisting with building problems/disputes, building stage inspections,pre-contract review advice for peace of mind 200 blogs http://www.buildingexpert.net.au/blog This is 100% true.
