Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 20, 2021 10:11 am We're building a 3-storey steel-frame house in Brisbane, and we're trying to understand what we should be looking for in terms of acoustic and thermal insulation (our builder is not very helpful, according to them anything would in Brisbane). Half of the ground level floor (has media room and garage) is inside of a hill and blocks are used for the part that is not - no insulation there, apart from the plasterboard. Roof, sides and back of the house are Colorbond, and front of the house has lot of big windows and wheathertex. What we have at the moment in terms of insulation (according to our builder): * R2.5 glasswool bats for external walls for mid and top levels * R2.5 glasswool bats in top level ceiling * Acoustic insulation on all internal walls (don't know which one) So my questions to the wise homeone community would be: * Does the above look enough, for our build ? * Should we add acoustic insulation between the floors as well ? The last thing I want it people in dining listening to the sounds of someone flushing toilet in ensuit * If between-floors acoustic insulation is a good idea - any recommendations on particular type ? I didn't find anything on Bunnings website: all acoustic batts were for walls, and I'm not sure if they can be used in ceiling. * I read horror stories about steel-frame houses being very noisy sometimes. Is there anything we can do cheaply to reduce the noise to a minimum ? * Do we need to do anything additional about the ground level ? We could install thermal insulation there, but it would eat up internal space, plus we're not sure how much value it would add. Any recommendations would be very appreciated ! I would most definitely put sound insulation in all internal walls, as well as between the floors. Rockwool seems to be the popular one, plus you can consider acoustic plasterboard for rooms that will generate a lot of noise. Also I'd go for concrete tiled roof, if noise is a concern. Colorbond will be noisy when it rains.
