Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Jul 21, 2021 9:01 pm Hi All, Recently I had approached one custom builder and he suggested for a normal construction for around 33 squares to be around 580K and he said If I go with Hebal construction I can reduce the cost by around 50K. Trying to understand, whether Hebal is good? Whether the cost savings comes at the cost of quality of construction ? Thanks Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 2Jul 24, 2021 10:56 am Here Is Perth still obsessed with Double Brick.....YES and its beats autoclaved aerated concrete bricks hands down on price and quality Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 3Jul 24, 2021 10:58 am StructuralBIMGuy Here Is Perth still obsessed with Double Brick.....YES and its beats autoclaved aerated concrete bricks hands down on price and quality Sorry thanks for the response. Apologies am a layman in understanding these terms. If I am right in my interpretation, you are saying hebal construction is not on par with normal brick construction? If yes, I will just stick to normal brick construction. Thanks Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 4Jul 24, 2021 11:09 am There are whole suburbs of Houses in Perth that were built with thermalite ACC bricks. LOL, those houses ( real estate) sell at a discount, homeowner battlers are tired of repairing the cracks. You will need to consult a local engineer and not a New home sales representative Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 5Jul 24, 2021 11:16 am Checked Wiki and found this Autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC) is a lightweight, precast, foam concrete building material suitable for producing concrete masonry unit (CMU) like blocks. Composed of quartz sand, calcined gypsum, lime, cement, water and aluminum powder, AAC products are cured under heat and pressure in an autoclave. Invented in the mid-1920s, AAC simultaneously provides structure, insulation, and fire- and mold-resistance. Forms include blocks, wall panels, floor and roof panels, cladding (façade) panels and lintels.[1][2] AAC products may be used for both interior and exterior construction, and may be painted or coated with a stucco or plaster compound to guard against the elements, or covered with siding materials such as veneer brick or vinyl siding. In addition to their quick and easy installation, AAC materials can be routed, sanded, or cut to size on site using standard power tools with carbon steel cutters.[3][4] And from Hebal site , the below https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Autoclaved_aerated_concrete#cite_note-4 CSR Hebel is Australia’s leading manufacturer of autoclaved aerated concrete (AAC). Backed by CSR, the trusted name in building products, Hebel is a strong yet lightweight building product that is available in panels or blocks. It is kind to the environment, quick to build with and better to live in. So now interpreting, all and based on your understood, it looks like in Peth the HEBAL is used extensively and they develop cracks. Thanks and heaps for your inputs. Just was thinking I could save 50grand by switching to hebal. Now I will forget about it it is not worth saving money and then impact quality of house. I will just stick to the brick Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 6Jul 24, 2021 11:24 am Venkata So now interpreting, all and based on your understood, it looks like in Peth the HEBAL is used extensively and they develop cracks. NO... hebel has not gained a foot hold in the Perth Domestic housing market Thermalite was a local BGC product (DECADES AGO) back then BGC didn't have clay brick Kilns. BGC stopped producing Thermalite, the industry now uses 2c Clay bricks 20 bricks per m2 so its the same cost, better product Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 7Jul 24, 2021 11:31 am Ok thanks. Back to square one of my question about using HEBAL instead of Brick, is it good or bad or better than traditional brick construction. I had approach one of the custom builder who is very reputed for quality and he constructs with brick and said 10 years before he was apprehensive about using Hebal as he was not confident. But he said later as he gained more confidence and he is using Hebal now in his constructions. In general he said he constructs with brick and at the same time if the customer wants he can use Hebal which results in saving. He said it would be my (as customer) choice and he will be more than happy to use either brick or hebal that I want and he says he does not any doubt about the quality of Hebal. It is just that Hebal is gaining popularity now. So now this being the feedback from one of the custom builder whom I had shortlisted, I just wanted others view on this. Again, I had spoken with Metricon recently and it appears they do use Hebal extensively. When I had asked the sales consultant about the quality of Hebal, he said METRICAL infact uses HEBAL for their high end houses, and he said that is a testament to the fact that HEBAL is good. So I got views from one custom builder (the builder himself) and one sales consultant from big builder. Base on these two people's inputs, I am thinking of why not go for HEBAL, if I am not compromising on the quality and If I say 50K, that is worth the efforts. However my wife is completely against using HEBAL as she said she does not want to take any risk by using a material which many people are not using. So, I am trying to views of the forum especially if somebody had already used HEBAL for construction what is their views Re: Whether construction with Hebal is good? 8Jul 24, 2021 11:58 am Consult your Engineer about your design and deal with the facts, ie AS3700 Masonry Structures. I don't think anyone in Australia is using AAC blocks (they are heavily used a lot in Europe, US, Asia though) but a lot of builders (including Metricon) are using Hebel AAC Panels for walls as well as for flooring. hi guys.
