Hi.
have just done my tile selection and upgraded our bathroom wall tiles to 300x600 from the 200x500 and have been told that it will cost more to INSTALL.
Any idea roughly how much more it might cost?

So double the labor cost? I have no doubt that's what they told you... but I don't buy it. We've just had 300x600 wall tiles installed (full height, floor to ceiling), and there was a 2 man team for the tiling, but they spent 99% of the time working in different rooms and at times on different floors. No second person was required to lay them, and the two guys were both small & elderly... I hasten to add that they are the best tilers we've ever experienced, very impressive work, I still don't understand why they're laying tiles for a volume builder. We made sure we got their contact details for some of the post handover tiling we have planned. For us there was no additional installation charge for tiles up to 600x600. There was additional charges for supply of tiles outside the builders standard range. Re: Cost to lay bigger tiles - Perth WA 5Jul 08, 2021 10:43 pm strannik Yeah, we were told that for 600 x 600 tiles too. Or rather that going above 450 x 450 will attract extra. Not sure where 300 x 600 fits in there. Yeah.. I guess that different builders/tilers will have different prices and their reasons for them. For us, building with a volume builder, we didn't have any option to shop around to different suppliers. Re: Cost to lay bigger tiles - Perth WA 6Jul 09, 2021 11:57 pm We charge (I work for a builder) roughly $16m2 (labour only) for 300x600mm over standard, but then on top of that if the builder only allows for 200mn high (skirting tile) you will charged the full rate (tile supply and install price) for the additional 100mm tiling. I know other companies charge a lot more and will be up to if you want to pay the additional cost Re: Cost to lay bigger tiles - Perth WA 7Jul 10, 2021 6:59 am mkbdard Hi. have just done my tile selection and upgraded our bathroom wall tiles to 300x600 from the 200x500 and have been told that it will cost more to INSTALL. Any idea roughly how much more it might cost? mkbdard I saw your thread and I couldnt help but add my 2 cents. FYI Trade secret Builders don't pay tilers any more to lay bigger tiles. From my time running Metricon to now running my own business, I have never paid more to lay a 1200x600 versus a 300x300. The only tiles we pay more for are mosaic and extremely heaving stone pavers, such as 600x600x30 as they are so damn heavy and take a long time to cut. Honestly, it's one of my pet peeves when customers get charged more for bigger tiles. It's a complete scam in my opinion. Stick to what you know and not what you think you know Hi Doozer1905 I hope you are having a great Saturday. You're correct, I don't know much about WA other than its a fantastic place, with great wine and great people, and lots of iron ore. But unfortunately additional tiling costs is an issue that happens in the eastern states as well, it's not just a problem that is unique to your gorgeous part of the world. But think about it logically, in the time it takes a tiler lay a 1200x600 wall tile he would have to lay 2 600x600 tiles. Yes they use a stronger glue but its not worth the additional cost that people are charged in the eastern states. Anyway, hope you have a great weekend and I look forward to reading more of your posts in the future Cheers Simeon Architectural Homes & Duplexes - specialising in custom designing homes to your budget Get a Free Onsite Consultation Today or send a PM for information, questions or advice. Re: Cost to lay bigger tiles - Perth WA 11Jul 10, 2021 3:56 pm Tiling job for bigger tiles is more expensive as it requires more cutting and more precise measurement. E.g. if you have cut 300x300 tile wrongly you just through it away, but with 1200x1200 tile it might be problematic as it is much more expensive. Cost to lay bigger tiles - Perth WA 12Jul 11, 2021 4:14 am My partner laid our tiles which are 1200x600. Two tiles in a box weigh 38kilos. Imagine each tile that weighs 19kilos with glue and try to push that down or lift that up when you need to adjust or apply more glue. It wrecks your wrist even with the use of suction cup. They were quality Italian tiles but some were bowed and a few cracked trying to lift them back up. Imagine if you buy cheaper tiles which have other issues like difference in size and super thin? He did it for our floor but would not bother doing it for someone else. There’s a lot of know-it-all here who most probably had not lifted a finger to do any actual work. People here who say it should not cost more to lay bigger tiles definitely have no idea what they’re talking about. Most of Perth has class A (sandy soil), except for some areas near rivers or hills. 2 13098 1 11004 |
