Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Mar 18, 2021 12:46 pm Hi everyone, when you buy a land, say a rectangle shape, do you prefer the long size face north? for myself, I am thinking to design the living room and most bedrooms to face north, to get lots of sunshine. What do you think? What shape land is the best, square or rectangle? Thanks. Re: Land direction 2Mar 18, 2021 1:15 pm Ideally you want your living areas facing north. With most builders these days, designs are able to have the rears "flipped" meaning if you have a block that has an east or west facing frontage, the rear can be flipped to accommodate the appropriate orientation for maximum light and energy efficiency. As to having sunny bedrooms, that's probably a personal choice. most people dont spend a lot of time in bedrooms, so its not an optimal choice if you have to chose between living areas/bedrooms facing north. If its two stories you might have the benefit of being able to have both bedrooms and living areas facing north. Re: Land direction 5Mar 19, 2021 8:36 pm I once lived in a rented apartment with bad blinds and the bedroom window facing east. I hated it - the glare from the sun crept into the bedroom every morning when I was trying to get that last one or two hours of sleep. But it's very much a personal thing. My other half believes it will bring good fortune to have sunlight shining into the bedroom. Square with North to the rear would be best but hard to find. Most are obviously rectangular (and getting skinnier). I would look for a rectangular block east west facing (west to the street) that is still wide enough that you could put a long house close to the southern boundary with your yard in the northern side. This way you get get the majority of your rooms facing north and still look out to a yard of some sort (also allows some more buffer if there are trees or a double storey to the north). Garage would be street facing and hence covering the afternoon summer sun from part of your house. Could plant a tree to provide shade to any rooms facing this way (same with east if you have the space). Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 31823 Pls help!
