I would look for a rectangular block east west facing (west to the street) that is still wide enough that you could put a long house close to the southern boundary with your yard in the northern side. This way you get get the majority of your rooms facing north and still look out to a yard of some sort (also allows some more buffer if there are trees or a double storey to the north). Garage would be street facing and hence covering the afternoon summer sun from part of your house. Could plant a tree to provide shade to any rooms facing this way (same with east if you have the space).
