Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 09, 2008 10:30 pm Hi All
I've searched for info on here about colours appointments but haven't found exactly what I'm after (usually I search and fine exactly what I want, this forum is superb). First home builder here in Brisbae with Pl4ntation. Signed contract last week, colours appointment is on Tuesday. It's taken a year to get this far and I've learned all about small lot codes, character assessment, council trees, and of course seen countless display homes from a variety of builders. We've got the inside and outside of the house all sorted after seven new home proposals, yes 7! Unfortunately, somewhere along the line we forgot to spend much time considering colours?!?! Now the outside is OK, we are going to copy one of the displays. However everything inside we are unsure about apart from some general idea's about light tiles and dark carpet. Anyhow on to my actual question...can anyone explain how exactly the colours appointment works, how prepared do we need to be, and what specifically should we do before hand? All opinions appreciated PS It's a 2 storey 320m2 rendered brick with some cladding house. Re: Colours Appointment 2Oct 10, 2008 6:38 am My builder has supplied me with a colour selection pack listing all the things that we need to choose. They have requested that we complete as much of it as we can before the three hour appointment, but I don't think it normally works like that, I think normally you can do it all at the appointment.
I would suggest flipping through a big pile of magazines and ripping out internals that you like, also go through all the big display websites and take screen shots of things you like, if you take this to colour selection it will give your consultant a good start on what you like. Good luck! Re: Colours Appointment 3Oct 10, 2008 6:55 am I agree.
They only allow a certain amount of time per appointment ( atleast ours did) so they asked me tocome prepared with ideas. They advised thaty It would be FAR LESS stressful & exhausting for both parties, if I knew ( DH left this up ot me) what I liked. So yes, as Rachelle suggested, definitley take examples of the things you like - magazines, save pictures on a memeory stick - anything that will help the colour consultant. The ordeal will be far easier. The other thing is that if you don't have any ideas prior to the appointment, you will be asked ON THE SPOT to make decisions. This becomes stressful in itself & believe me, the appt is very tiring. So if you're tired, you won't be making decisions that you'll be able to live with. Then after the appt, the doubts will start & you'll be in a pickle. We were out of there under an hour last tuesday.
much easier if you do some research beforehand... Research we did was to call the brick company and get addresses of the houses that use the brick you like (much better seeing the bricks on a house than a small display). We did the same thing for roof tiles. We also went to the laminex showroom near the airport. All we have to do now is the tiles selection but that is done closer to lock up and we go to beaumont tiles for that.. and we just take all our samples into them to match the tiles to everything else. Since tiles make up most of the inside of our house it makes sense to have a seperate appoitment for them. We were also told to have our bricks selected BEFORE the colour appointment. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Colours Appointment 6Oct 10, 2008 9:52 am We built with Simonds (melbourne company!), they sent a pack with all the companies they use suggested we go have a look before the apt, which we did, so when we went there we had a good indication of what we wanted.
The thing we did find, was we loved the colors of the display, BUT when we went to the color apt, things like the paint they used in the display wasn't standard, and the choices we had weren't matching what we really wanted, we did find something we thought would go good, but were a little disappointed we couldn't do what we first wanted. Now we see it in our house, we love it! (we are up to the final stage now!) The point being the displays have extras every where, so don't base your taste on the display, 1. end up costing you more to match it and 2. you may not be happy with having to settle for something else. The color consultants are there to help you, and should know what goes with what, so don't be afraid to ask! be perhaped to chose things you didn't even know you had to, like the shape of door handles and taps and light switches, and colors of downlights, l didn't even knew they came in a selection of colors! We had three appointment, one for color selection, one for electricals and one for tiles! Finally, one word of advice, be careful with your selections, when we chose our inside tile in one single tile on its own it look like a light brown, put them all together, and it now looks like a dark brown, also we were standing near a bright window with sun coming in on selection, so in the light our tile is lighter, but to look at normally in huge lots we now have a darker brown, lucky thing for us it does match with other things, but now we have dark carpets and a dark tile, doesn't make the place look as bright and open! Re: Colours Appointment 7Oct 10, 2008 10:03 am OMG……you should have everything sorted before you go there.
Folders of pitchers that you like, colours that you like, and ideas you like. Don’t expect the colour consultant to be able to pick your brain in a short space of time. If you front with photos of things you like she/he will understand more about you and know where you are heading. Do your homework this weekend! Get as much sorted as you can before you go there, that way you will not feel flustered and make quick decisions that you will be sorry for later. Good luck. Internal and External Building and Colour Consultant Online - Worldwide http://www.denovoconcepts.com Re: Colours Appointment 8Oct 10, 2008 1:00 pm I had EVERYTHING sorted colour wise with my internals and externals way before the colour appointment. I had chosen all the flooring as well, and made sure that it all went together (which initially it didn't so I had to re think some of my choices). I spent hours at Cosham (H3nley's colour place) getting samples and putting them all together and looking at them in different lights.
Despite having all of the colours sorted except grout colour, the appointment still took about 3 hours, as the Consultant had to write everything down, and make sure we were happy with our choices. She was great, and very pleased we were so organised! I had to be well organised, as being a Librian, I find it hard to make a decision on the spot! Good Luck!! Henley - Wilshire Mk 3 ... You need to have all this sorted before you attend the meeting. Get it all sorted first. Go to heaps of display homes, google, magazines, etc....
I would suggest delaying the colour appointment if you don't yet know what you want. You'll be better off in the long run. Built the Eden Brae Cambridge 34 Family with Boston Corner Facade Re: Colours Appointment 10Oct 12, 2008 8:00 pm Thank you everyone
So after a BIG weekend of colour hunting, we are 95% sorted. We went to the builders HO and low and behold they actually have a checklist for the colours appointment! So we spent three hours at the showroom choosing door handles, bench tops, laminex, paint etc Then we went to the tile shop... And after nearly 2 hours there, we had lost the plot and went home to contemplate putting off the colours appointment as we could not find any tiles to match the laminex and QQ bench we liked! Fear not, we went this morning to a new display village at Coomera (Gold Coast for you southerners). After looking at 12 more displays we decided to change our internal colour scheme. Back to the tile shop we went and 90 minutes later we had the floor, wall and feature tiles selected. All we need now is to decide on the kitchen splashback colour (owing to the fact we changed the colour scheme and we had already picked it) and what sort of toilet (wife wants one where you can't see the S bend?) and that's about it for colours. Nothing like leaving it to the last minute! I am sure there will be some things we've missed that aren't on the list but we're feeling a lot better now. I found the thread of 'things you forgot' which will be my next issue. Still with one day before colours, plenty of time!!! Re: Colours Appointment 11Oct 12, 2008 8:23 pm Congrats on biting the bullet. You'll be so happy at the appt, that you had e/thing sorted 1st.
NOthing like being unprepared to add pressure to the building process. The decision making is tough enough without being forced to make on-the-spot decisions.
