Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 08, 2008 10:25 pm Hi,
My frame was delivered today and i found that one piece of the roof frame was broken. See picture below. Is this reasonable - will it affect the structure since its so small? http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_StLRPOHB8h0/S ... G_0073.jpg Your comments are appreciated.[/img] Re: Broken Frame - okay?? 3Oct 08, 2008 11:54 pm That looks to be the tail of the truss in which case its no big deal and wont affect anything structually. The carpenter will just nail another piece on the side as its only to support the facia.
To be sure a bigger pic would be needed and possibly a truss layout and truss number but im confident its nothing to worry about. The truss company can assure you of that with a simple phone call to them. Re: Broken Frame - okay?? 4Oct 09, 2008 12:12 am The carpenter could nail on another gang plate (even if it's not a structural issue) to remedy the situation, but they shouldn't have to! If you are trying to fit within a tight schedule, have the carpenters repair it, otherwise, have it replaced. It's the principle!!! Re: Broken Frame - okay?? 5Oct 09, 2008 12:39 am Well it cant always be about the principle because common sense has to be used aswell. If it was structual then there would be no doubt id be saying get it replaced but if its not structual then theres no big deal and the carpenter will sort it out.
This is a common occurance and I as a carpenter would not install a defective truss and I would be on the phone to the truss company straight away to have a new one sent out. Dont stress over it. Re: Broken Frame - okay?? 6Oct 09, 2008 8:19 am Point it out to the SS....serves two purposes...gets it looked at and he knows your watching. He may decide to order a new one.
Although it doesn't sound like to big a deal as I_B says they probably just double up the section in that spot to get around the defect. I wouldn't be in favour of an additional gangnail, ripping out gangnails makes an awful mess on the timber, and you'd be effectively nailing a new one into damaged wood. Certainly not panic stations... Re: Broken Frame - okay?? 7Oct 09, 2008 12:50 pm Hey, thanks for the replies. Yes IB it is the tail (end triangle of the frame) and yes it was delivered like that.
