H20 is right. I agree with you Hillsbuild, fortunately for you, you have an amazing house style that suits a light roof perfectly. Most conventional houses are designed and bricks that are available are suited to dark roof colours as they have been the norm for so long, it is very hard to choose light when dark looks great. We have chosen shale grey but feeling very uncertain. Wanted views of both sides those who have built and living under the dark colours and those living under the light and maybe those who have experienced both. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 6Dec 28, 2020 9:42 pm I have surfmist roof exactly because of less heat absorption but most of the neighborhood have dark roofs Dark roofs just make a different style that many people like but I don't Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 8Dec 29, 2020 9:39 am Dark coloured tiles or colorbond should be made illegal. The same should be applied to dark coloured pavers and there should be stricter regulation in regards the % of the block that can be paved.
There's an entire new development near us all with dark roofs, vast expanses of dark pavers and the little that isn't paved is covered in that green plastic stuff masquerading as grass. Maybe local government can apply a levy on rates for dwellings with dark roofs as a starter to wean people off them? Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 9Dec 29, 2020 11:36 am New houses are not subject to their environmental impact but they should be. Althom green plastic stuff masquerading as grass Plus wood sequesters carbon, concrete slabs don't. In fact, the cement industry is one of the biggest contributors to greenhouse gases. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 11Dec 29, 2020 1:47 pm bluesteel Most new houses seem to have a roof at the darker end of the colour spectrum - but what about heat? There is a lot of information out there about light colours and having a cooler house. So why don't more people choose a lighter roof? Thoughts? In my opinion most people choose dark because they simply fancy the color. I like a dark roof but I nearly considered having a white roof because of the same info you have mentioned above. But in the end we stick with the dark coloured roof. Our house so far is fine temperature wise. But I can’t really say if the roof colour have no effect because we have upgraded to a higher ceiling and we have put internal wall insulations in all the rooms. Yep thats the dilemma....you can offset with insulation, ceiling height, sarking etc but how much better could it be? I think there needs to be some point where local government/state government makes decisions on what is best for the community on a wider scale and encourages not only lighter roof colours but more importantly? eaves, passive design, reduced non permeable coverage etc etc. Also as far as air coniditioning surely AC runs better/more effiiciently with potentially longer life in a lighter sarked roof than a unsarked dark tiled roof. Am probably going to stick with the lighter roof we have already chosen, but think this is worth discussing just like we discuss orientation etc etc Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 14Dec 29, 2020 2:04 pm sociangal bluesteel Most new houses seem to have a roof at the darker end of the colour spectrum - but what about heat? I've read that dark roofs don't have a significant impact on the indoor temps so long as the roof insulation is decent. Also depends on the climate. The heat that is absorbed and emitted from roofs back into the surrounding area is probably more the issue with new developments having a large percentage of black roof coverage and very little tree coverage or even ground level natural landscapes. In a warming climate, this is counter-productive. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 15Dec 29, 2020 2:05 pm Althom This is worth a read. I guess, it’s a good thing that despite us having dark roofs, we are surrounded by greeneries and a lot of our neighbouring houses have light coloured roofs. 3 of them even have white roofs. Maybe people should be given more awareness about these things. Maybe things like making light roofs cheaper than dark roofs will encourage house owners to choose the lighter ones. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 17Jan 02, 2021 9:42 am Sociangal, in our neck of the woods those roofs would not be permitted by our local council as the light that reflects off them on sunny days may cause glare for neighbouring properties. I agree though that lighter roofs would be way better for both the occupants and the environment. Unfortunately, a lot of home owners only consider their own comfort which is managed by roof space insulation and air conditioning. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-03-01/ ... ct/9361156 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 19Jan 02, 2021 11:01 am I don't see many dark roofs on new builds here very often at all (Sunshine Coast, QLD). In fact one of the developments, Aura in Caloundra, has in their design guidelines that the roof must meet a solar absorptance rating of less than 0.5. Re: What's your opinion on DARK vs LIGHT roofs 20Jan 02, 2021 5:12 pm our last build we had surfmist... after a few years it started to look dirty and no amount of rain helped it look like it once did when installed, this time around we have gone back to monument as it suited the house and colour scheme we were going for. i didnt notice our surfmist roof being any cooler in summer then our previous home that was woodland grey I said after the 1st build “ never again “ & now im on my 3rd Thanks for the suggestion.
