Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Dec 19, 2020 7:43 pm I’m looking at building with a BGC company in Perth next year. Before committing to build with them I went to see some other companies. One of those companies told me to steer clear of BGC as the company is having some troubles, which might mean the build doesn’t even get finished. I decided not to give it any further though coming from a competing company. That was a few months ago. After lots of research I did decide to go with a BGC group builder. Been really happy so far but haven’t got as far as signing the building contract yet. Today I overheard a conversation in a display home that made me double think the advice from the competing builder a few months back. Has anyone heard that BGC are having troubles? Really don’t want to commit to a builder that might go bust half way through the build. Re: BGC Company WA 2Dec 19, 2020 9:35 pm I’m not 100% sure but we were considering a BCG builder and our mortgage broker warned us against it. He said he couldn’t guarantee finance for us with a BCG builder because the banks were wary of them and there was a trend of not financing builds with them. We eventually went with someone else for a completely unrelated reason, so I don’t know if there’s truth in it, but I have heard they do have issues. I suppose it was in the back of my mind after another well respected builder said to me to avoid them as the company was having troubles and that the build might not be completed. Overheard the second conversation in a display home between two employees. They were complaining about the company and said that it will may become evident in a few months when everything goes ‘pear shaped’. They were complaining about the company and said that it will may become evident in a few months when everything goes ‘pear shaped’. I've recently signed my build contract with them in December. Didn't get any hint from them during our discussions (prior to signing) that there were significant issues within BGC that would make build difficult to complete. Early on, the Sales consultant just mentioned that they had to limit the number of new build contracts as they could not guarantee meeting the grant/stimulus requirements, i.e. have the build contract ready to be signed prior to 31st Dec 2020. Anyways currently waiting on builder to access site for surveys and report and from there pre-start and final drawings. Might just check-in with sales consultant to see if all okay! Re: BGC Company WA 7Jan 03, 2021 12:28 pm BGC is WA's biggest residential builder and has 8 sub companies. As WA's biggest builder unless their customers are self financing then there's obviously a lot of banks etc willing to lend people money to build with them. I think there'd be more than whispers if they were going under. Re: BGC Company WA 8Jan 03, 2021 1:23 pm Althom BGC is WA's biggest residential builder and has 8 sub companies. Re: BGC Company WA 9Jan 03, 2021 3:11 pm Most builders are flat out right now due to low interest rates and Government handouts. I suspect a few of them will end up with bad reputations due to; 1. Using poorly skilled trades because they can't access good ones or are unwilling to pay for good ones 2. Not delivering on time Re: BGC Company WA 10Aug 30, 2021 9:08 am One would think the banks contact a credit rating company before they lend any money if they do not know the financial status themselves. BGC has a reputation of being anti union and anti monopoly, like the old brick and cement monopoly in Perth. Re: BGC Company WA 11Sep 07, 2021 11:59 pm There is a Facebook site that I don’t think I am allowed to mention on here (but it’s title is a synonym of bad beginning in s) that continuously mentions that group. Some of the posts are from people with ridiculous expectations, in my view unfairly critical, but there are nonetheless overwhelming numbers in relation to that builder. If I had to guess I would say 9/10 of the complaints relate to that builder. Re: BGC Company WA 16Apr 09, 2022 1:14 pm BGC is trying to sell. It's the second attempt in 4 years. From Financial Review "The BGC board has now kickstarted a renewed push to sell the company, which has been simplified after a string of asset sales, but still operates 16 businesses. It has appointed Macquarie Capital to handle the sale in a process expected to take six to 12 months." Our building process has come to a standstill and company has stopped responding Same for us. We ended up signing with them after being reassured by the sales consultant that place would be finished within contracted timeframes. Approached the company in Oct 2020. We were told they were signing no more contracts before the grant cut-off, so we signed our PWA in Dec 2020 and contract in March 2021. Slab in late Aug 2021. Bricks were onsite for 3 months before we were told we could arrange our own brickies. We paid a bonus $3,000 to a brickie team to get them onsite in Jan- otherwise we were looking at April/May (or later) before bricks would be laid. There was an issue with our plans. The brickies did a fantastic job, but they had to knock down parts and rebuild due to issues with wrong doors being ordered and incorrect tech drawings. Bricks didn't finish until March 2022. We've also organised our own roof carpenter (another bonus we are paying of at least $1,000-$2,000). Parts of the timber arrived onsite over three weeks ago. Tried contacting BGC a few times a week via email and phone. Left multiple messages and emails, but no response from BGC about when we can arrange for our roof carpenter to start. Meanwhile, paying rent and bills where we are, plus hundreds per week on the interest/rates/utilities for the block (like everyone else in the same boat). The worst part is the interest only construction loan. We were told during our brick meeting with site supervisor back in Feb that they couldn't tell us when the place would be finished and we would get extensions of time for every stage of the build. We raised another issue with the plans (window put in the wrong place on the plans) and were told we would 'learn to live with it'. By that stage, we didn't even want it fixed, as it would cause more delays, we brought it up to confirm that our plans would be correct moving forward. I feel bad for all the people that works for them, as I can imagine they are baring the brunt of everyone's frustration. Seems that management signed on too many contracts and now they can't deliver. Re: BGC Company WA 19Apr 10, 2022 6:00 pm drrky2k Hi Thank you for your reply I have no knowledge of details of building process. I was also offered to get my own brickies. However I have no idea about this. I feel I'm just stuck I can relate. I still have no idea about it all. If you haven't been waiting long for bricks at this stage and still haven't been given a place in the queue, I would recommend talking to everyone you know to see if anyone knows a decent, reliable bricklayer. We even did Gumtree, Facebook posts and Hi Pages. The bricklayer can't already be on BGC's books. If you have the means, throw in any bonus that you can get together. I worked overtime for weeks to get a bonus together (we didn't get the main grants, so didn't have any surplus cash). Contact BGC and ask for the subcontractor pack for owner nominated trades and also ask how much per brick at the moment. If you find a brick layer that is willing to sub-contract to BGC, then they will get the price that BGC are paying. Then you will more than likely need to offer a bonus in addition to that to get a decent brick layer. The alternative is an open ended wait. Good luck either way you go - wish you all the best. We are building a house that was planned to be clad in Hardie Linea, our builder has now requested to swap this for BGC Nuline Plus. They look fairly similar and he has… 0 635 |
