Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Sep 24, 2020 5:26 pm Hi everyone, I am looking to build a Porter Davis waldorf 50. The rear void faces west which has me concerned around heat and general enjoyment of this space. I would have upgraded AC, with similar blinds, behind my block would also be a two storey house so imagine after about 5pm I would have coverage. I could possibly extend the eave on the rear as well as a motorised blind outside to stop the sun heating up the glass. Does anyone have thoughts to how to improve this situation? Thanks in advance Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Large windows in Void facing west 2Sep 24, 2020 5:46 pm Yes, this house will be like a stove with windows like that. Double glazing Low E + adequate cover from the outside will be a must. In case of using curtains, you won't be able to enjoy much of the views in the afternoon. Re: Large windows in Void facing west 3Sep 24, 2020 9:49 pm Im really confused about what to do! Ive lived in rear, west facing homes and yes the heat is definitely increased. There is a north facing window adjacent, i could close up the window and put in a wide, shorter window. E.g. 3 x 0.5m window to reduce amount of sun coming through. Its really the 3 hours between 3-6pm that the sum is hot and coming down through there... Re: Large windows in Void facing west 4Sep 25, 2020 1:08 am I have the same situation in my home and I dont find it a problem. We have put in Comfort Glass which does help a bit, we have 600mm eaves and we also have motorised blind as well. Winter it is absolutely gorgeous in this space but in summer we have maybe closed the blinds a hand full of times. Personally I open the house up with breezes as much as possible than run air con anyway Re: Large windows in Void facing west 5Sep 25, 2020 6:09 am Splashers I have the same situation in my home and I dont find it a problem. I will have solar so can run air con pretty much all the time but just not sure. In my parents home we found that the west facing living room was always 2 degrees warmer than any other room...even with the aircon on. It might be a bit darker in the mornings but the light is still light, so you should be getting it. Similar to what you see from your western windows 3 15596 Not sure if that works? I was told the issue is the headspace clearance requirement on step 4. My builder is proposing shifting the beam 310mm towards the kitchen...I'm… 2 1331 To me, that's what it looks like: poor backfilling and/or compaction. The width is about 1000mm maybe. That conduit in the photo is for the NBN. The water is about… 4 2137 |
