Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Aug 03, 2021 3:09 pm Plan to build a double storey house in Melbourne. External wall use Hebel and windows have been upgraded to double glazing. so no worries energy rate 6 star.
I will move in once handover, leave alone energy rate, can pls anyone shed light do I still need to: 1. necessary to upgrade external wall from standard R2.0 to R2.7 insulation batts? - builder quoted almost $4k ( my external wall use Hebel, so perhaps use lower R rate to save budget?) 2. necessary to add R3.1 soundscreen insulation batts to first floor joists? first floor I have carpet - builder quoted almost $5k. ( normally what rate choosed if have carpet, R3.1 will be the top rate?) Thanks heaps. Re: R rate for New House Insulation 2Aug 03, 2021 4:25 pm R3.0 Pink batts are roughly $5/m2. https://insulationaustralia.com.au/prod ... 0-x-155mm/ (this pack contains 16 batts covering 8 sqm). What is the area of your second floor (excluding stair cases, voids, etc.)? Even if it is 200 sqm, I would say that it will take way less than a day for an unskilled labourer ($200/day) to push the batts into the ceiling (and cut them where necessary). So whatever your builder quotes is $5k, can be done in for less than $1.2k. Re: R rate for New House Insulation 3Aug 03, 2021 7:28 pm thanks bro. my 1st floor around 132sqm. No matter builder quote seems i have no alternative option but accept? it is hard to arrange 3rd party to do this part during either stage. just wondering which R value would be appropriate so it may save half arm and leg by selecting lower R value. Re: R value for New House Insulation 6Aug 03, 2021 8:53 pm I would say for $4k it is not worth it, I suggest you try and talk some sense into him that this simply can't cost that much as insulation prices are openly available, he needs to provide judgement where this 4k is coming from. Re: R value for New House Insulation 8Aug 09, 2021 5:48 pm chars0974 thanks bro. For external walls I would definitely go with R2.5, assuming it is for a standard 90mm stud wall. R2.7 gets some plasterers in a fizz because they reckon it pushes out a bit from the wall cavity. Anyhow we did a fair amount of our own insulation work on our current house and the advantage of the denser R2.5 over R2.0 is the ease of installation. It's basically firmer and holds better when you handle it and stays in place well once in the stud bay. Oh yeah obviously it also reduces temperature gains/losses, which is stating the obvious! Final comment I would rather have a good installation of R2.0 than a poor install of R2.5 if that makes sense. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Check our Homeone build blog here Re: R value for New House Insulation 9Aug 10, 2021 3:14 pm darb74 chars0974 thanks bro.
