Browse Forums Building A New House Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 81Jun 20, 2013 10:35 pm It's funny you say that, Scotty. I'm actually thinking that attaching a bin to the inside of the undersink cupboard door and converting the bin drawer into the third cupboard may be the best compromise. If I have to prioritise I think I'd prefer to keep the drawers and the microwave! fmac, the slab isn't due until next month so we should still be able to make some changes if necessary. But I do need the bench space beside the oven for the stunning Kitchenaid and Nespresso machine I don't actually own (yet). Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 82Jun 20, 2013 10:41 pm Yeah I was all for extra bench space when planning our kitchen layout though I was meaning a microwave recess that wouldn't sit much lower then your current overhead cupboards. Though I do like having the microwave hidden under the bench rather then on display If you remove the bin draw what about put the dishwasher where the bin draw is and then just make your draws wider to make up the extra space. Just a thought. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 83Jun 20, 2013 10:44 pm Good thinking. I'll ask at DAH tomorrow. Even two sets of drawers could be helpful. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 84Jun 20, 2013 10:46 pm I spent hours drawing possible kitchen layouts when I was planning mine. Hope they sort it and you also get the kitchen you want!! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 85Jun 20, 2013 10:52 pm Are you able to change your bin? I have 2 x 20lt bins on the back of a door and it is only 400 wide and has a small drawer below to store bin liners, garbage bags etc. This would save 50mm and could you lose 40mm from your sink cupboard without changing the sink? Maybe swap the bin and dishwasher so the bin is under your prep area and have the 4 drawers on the end closer to your dining area. Regards, Grumbles Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 86Jun 20, 2013 11:02 pm fancy pants I guess we could put the bin in the laundry Tracyw, but the whole point was to include it as part of the food preparation and clean-up area. The other half is not impressed. He feels this issue should have been addressed at the drafting stage, especially as we've already had a couple of re-draws of our beloved island bench. Looks like we're going into DA Central tomorrow to talk to someone face-to-face about our options. It's too painful playing email tennis, especially as the cabinet makers are pushing for a decision. Wish us luck. I suspect we'll need it. I'm afraid this may not be the only issue which arises after you finish your plans. We had to change a lot of our doors as the ones we had originally chosen didn't come in the sizes we needed. Would have thought they would know this when they costed it at prestart. We managed ok with the alternatives but was a bit disappointed that it happened this way. My build thread: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=64437 Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 87Jun 20, 2013 11:11 pm Hi fancy pants - don't have any more helpful advice for your island bench but just wanted to say good luck for tomorrow, I think it's a good idea to go in and speak to someone face to face. Hope you get an outcome you're happy with. T Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 88Jun 21, 2013 6:32 pm We saw our CLO today (who was absolutely great) and we're going to lose the bin drawer. Instead it will become an extra (skinnier) cupboard next to the sink with an adjustable shelf so we can either try to fit a bit inside it or fit a bin under the sink and use it for storage. I think it's the best compromise to avoid that damn seam in the Caesarstone. The swanky pull out bin drawer will have to wait for build #2! Thanks for your help everyone. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 89Jun 21, 2013 7:12 pm Depending how big it is you could put rails in there to hand tea towels... I'm glad they came up with a compromise you were happy with Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 90Jun 22, 2013 11:45 pm Glad to hear you have come to a decision you are happy with. We are moving to the construction phase next week so hoping we can be neck and neck with our builds. Will be good to see how we go. Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 91Jun 27, 2013 1:30 pm Looks like we'll have to lose another 20mm from the bench. We're still going back and forth with the plans. At this rate you'll be well ahead of us soon +Tbrown2012! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: KITCHEN HEL 92Jun 28, 2013 9:03 pm We haven't heard a peep from our CLO in regards to a date for the slab pour so you can imagine our astonishment when the other half drove by the block yesterday evening and saw this: http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/build_001_zps2788c870.jpg http://i1296.photobucket.com/albums/ag10/pants_de_fancy/build_002_zpscf72cf7f.jpg We then emailed our CLO who informed us this morning that we were scheduled to have the footings done today (SURPRISE!!) but couldn't confirm a date for the slab pour. Turns out it's been scheduled for Monday (SURPRISE!!). I should be excited but I'm just annoyed as we were intending to have our independent inspector carry out an inspection prior to the slab pour which is now impossible. I'm also a little concerned about the lack of communication coming from DAH. We wouldn't have had any idea this was going on if the other half hadn't decided to drive by on a whim. We have since checked with the bank to make sure the money would be available in time and it turns out our bank knew we were getting a slab before we did as DAH gave them fair warning to have the payment ready! Is it really that hard to send a simple email people? Grrrrr. Anyway, enough whining. Time to focus on the positive. WE'RE GETTING A SLAB ON MONDAY!!! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 93Jun 28, 2013 9:16 pm Woohoo for slab. But yes that's bad communication Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 94Jun 28, 2013 9:25 pm Yay for slab!! Hope communication improves from now Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 95Jun 28, 2013 9:52 pm The updates for our build progress (HBC) have been pretty minimal as well. We're always surprised at how far things are progressing when we check out our block. When we ask questions, they're super quick to respond and extremely professional, but not proactive at offering updates before they happen. Seems to be a complaint no matter who the builder is! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 97Jun 29, 2013 12:23 am Wow! Fantastic news and pics!!!! I can't believe they never told you?? We were handed over to construction this week but not sure who our CLO will be, at what stage did yours first make contact. We were told by the pre-constructin co ordinator site works would start next week with slab couple weeks after that. Impressed about how fast yours has developed!!! Congrats! When did your siteworks start? Looking forward to some slab pics soon Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 98Jun 29, 2013 7:43 am I don't think a communicative builder exists, I think if they did they'd have a monopoly on the building market.
Yay! For getting a slab on Monday - so exciting!!! Re: First home build with Dale Alcock in Aveley: SURPRISE SL 100Jun 29, 2013 11:27 am We have had similar issues but as unacceptable as it is this seems to be the way for all the builders. This is why we have to be proactive and visit the Site as much as possible. Fortunately for us, we live close by and it is on the way to everywhere so I visit every day at least twice a day.
