All finished We're really chuffed with the results, the block layer did a great job. We still have sand to shift from the bottom tier to the top one to even the bottom out, but otherwise it's full steam ahead for some organic compost to be trucked in, and some pebble paths to be laid Pebbles & Pavers: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ The retic was installed sneakily by our landscaper, thankfully it's a programmable automatic one and not just a manual switch Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 783Aug 03, 2010 9:34 pm Wow! We do here if it's above 500mm high. What's the height of your 2 course wall? Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 795Aug 04, 2010 3:58 pm Our block layer said we didn't need approval because it's under 70cm (2 courses of blocks, each block is about 30cm high, and part of it is buried) and we don't need concrete footings either - just compacted sand. This is for the Shire of Mundaring though... it would have been $500 in council approval if it were larger :O Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 796Aug 04, 2010 4:04 pm Yeah, I will contact them when we're ready to do it, *if* I get to do it. Your front yard looks way bigger (from house to road) than ours, we are only 4.5 metre setback. Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 797Aug 04, 2010 4:09 pm I wish we were closer, unfortunately the minimum setback was about 6m. It's annoying because I would have preferred that extra space at the back of the house where it will be utilised better. There are some cul-de-sac blocks that are quite wide and the owners have a larger front yard than backyard because of the setback rules Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 798Aug 04, 2010 4:24 pm Yeah that does suck! We had a choice of 4.5 or 6 and in fact they were trying to push us to go to 6 (redink) but cos it was already submitted to council, I decided to leave it, our backyard is only 5m from house to fence as it is. Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 799Aug 08, 2010 7:59 pm Hi, Your wall looks amazing! Can I ask how much your retaining wall cost in total? And is it concrete stamped or sandstone? forgive my ignorance! http://dare2build.blogspot.com/ Re: Vundaful's House - Retaining wall done :) 800Aug 25, 2010 7:27 pm Hi Cath! Your answers can be found back a page or two, but in short the wall cost just under $3000 (labour+materials) and we used reconstituted limestone from BGC Well our landscape package is finally in - we forfeited our plant allowance to upgrade our grass from Wintergreen couch to Empire zoysia, and also got sub-mulch drip irrigation for the garden beds (still crappy sprayers for the lawn though). On Fu's advice, we tilled in 3 cubic metres of certified organic compost (purchased from Gardener's Direct, who were VERY quick with delivery!). We worked this in over the course of two weekends, and a few of our neighbours came over to have a chat about it so as a side bonus we got to know them better! Can't wait to stick some plants in the beds! Bring on Spring!
