Brickies started last week probably thursday or friday but its been pouring so didnt do alot. The gutter guy came and finished off his bit on saturday and said that they had a 6-8 man gang doing the bricks so wont take them long at all (as long as the rain stays away) Has your bricking started yet vid? Hi clm1982, No Bricks yet colourbond roof sheets sitting out the front for the last week and half but obviously too much wind and rain to do anything, with the forecast for fine days this week hopefully some action! Re: Building in SA! 643Jul 05, 2009 7:30 pm ![]() Somewoman/Woodville South - you may be able to help me. Any others with advise will be appreciated too. When you got your house demolished what did you do with the phone cabling. I rang Telstra and they told ME to wrap the cable up and hang it from the stobie pole until the new house is built, where by it can be connected again. This just doesn't sound quite right to me. ![]() Advise will be greatly appreciated. Thanks Hi TamDaz We rang Telstra and they sent someone out to do it all. It looks like the cable is hanging from the stobie pole. They didn't even charge a fee for doing it. I would call up them up again if I were you. Hi Vid, our gas pipes were in the slab - atleast that's what I think they were since there was a point where the stove is going! Then when they put the frame up they ran cabley type things up the "wall". They finished our brickwork this week and have put the gas points in our alfresco, too. Maybe call your SS on Monday just to set your mind at ease! Re: Building in SA! 645Jul 05, 2009 9:39 pm ![]() Somewoman/Woodville South - you may be able to help me. You don't even need to have the telephone line disconnected if you don't wish to (although that means paying for a phone connection for the entire duration that the block is empty and the house is being built!!). They mentioned something about leaving the cable coiled in the telstra pit out front, but to be honest I'm not sure what they have done with it!! I'll take a look next time I am out at the block (probably tomorrow). Pretty sure that most demolition companies that I spoke to all said that you need to have water/gas/elec disconnected and everything else is fine as it is. As for the lines hanging from the stobie pole, I don't think it really is that much of a safety concern provided you coil it up and leave it out of reach (ie, use a ladder to hook it up somewhere high). One of the big old gum trees lost a massive branch, bringing down the phone line for the house next door to where we are now, and the house was unoccupied (for sale, owners had moved on long ago). Because there was nobody to complain about the lack of phone line, they just coiled it up and tied it high in a tree!!! Hi vid Our gas pipes went in once the frame went up. They took the pipes through the ceiling and down the walls to both the kitchen and the bbq point outside. I think the only time they would need it to go through your slab is if you are having a gas cooktop on an island bench where there is no wall to bring it down. If you are having a point outside it would just need to be in prior to bricking so they can brick around it but for kitchen it would only need to be in prior to plastering. Thanks for that alulei and woodvillesouth, I just looked through our paperwork AGAIN (you'd think I'd know every word of it by now) and as it mentions Gas hot water and Gas stove and Gas BBQ point I guess they will give us gas! I guess I also wonder when the gas company will be putting their gear under the ground, when we had the gas disconnected from the old house they dug up the footpath and a very large trench but there was still many metres of old pipe that the demolishers got up and then I dug up some more and the footing contractors dug up even more! so I guess they will be doing more trenches down the track! Re: Building in SA! 648Jul 06, 2009 9:34 am Thanks all for your advise re: telstra cabling. I think I will leave it connected to house for now and see what Demolition guys do with it first. Then if they request we do something, I can get a friend who use to work for Telstra to take it down and hook it high up on the stobie pole as per your suggestions. Thanks. We'd like to ensure that we have recourse at any given build stage to have things repaired before the next stage begins. We're looking at a start date in about 8 weeks. Haven't been given an exact date as of yet, will hear back from them once the council certification stuff is done. Chris has blogged it on house.yeoh.info We have two. One recommendation from the land agent and another recommendation from of this forum. <!-- snip --> Thanks a bunch!! We are going through this at the moment, our fence cost have blown out dramatically because of the need for retaining walls but the actual fence cost seems to be around $70-$72 per metre supplied and installed Re: Building in SA! 654Jul 07, 2009 7:15 pm Home Building and Renovation Expo this weekend at Wayville Showgrounds.. worth going? I had a quote the other day and supply and instal was about $130 per linear metre Went out to the block tonight and the brickies have finished one whole side and have started on the back, pretty sure it wont take long for them to finish. Our tiles for the roof have also been delivered so i think they will be going up this week too. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Re: Building in SA! 658Jul 08, 2009 12:42 am Vid. You just have to drive around the new estates to see that the bits at the front of the houses that are goign to be rendered seem to be just about any brick they can get there hands on. So yeah, I've seen it before ! Oddly enough, there is a house in the estate we are building in that looks like it is going to be almost totally rendered, and they have used this grey brick, which is almost the same colour as the brick we are building with, and we have paid an extra $2300 for. See this persons blog http://aldingahome.blogspot.com/2009/06/bricks-completed-and-35000-bill.html#comments Her house is being rendered outside and plastered inside. See the bricks on my blog I think they look almost the same. Re: Building in SA! 659Jul 08, 2009 12:08 pm We are having our house fully rendered so specifically requested if we could just use render bricks and be credited back on standard bricks. The answer was no, they will use standard bricks to build with. We have not yet started the build, but I highly doubt they will use standard bricks, I think they will just pocket the bonus made out using cheaper bricks and us paying the extra to have it rendered. Oh well, what can you do. ![]() Blog:http://tamdaz-themajestic.blogspot.com The Majestic - Henley - Adelaide Thread:https://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20635 Day 200 23-4-10 Re: Building in SA! 660Jul 08, 2009 12:55 pm Yep i see that all the time Vid, they use crappy 2nd hand bricks if you are rendering the whole front or whole house. We are only getting rendered coins and around the windows so they are using our normal bricks for that. I reckon at this rate our house will be fully bricked and roof tiles on by the end of next week, man things are going fast. I think we may end up being in about October (we thought christmas originally)!
