Browse Forums Building A New House Re: laura2009 - my build - cabinet pics 04/05 61May 22, 2011 9:19 am Wow! Not long now till PCI!! And so much to do. I hope they're being realistic. You'll be moving in at just the right time to take advantage of the mid-year sales. Sounds like you've been getting some good bargains already. Re: laura2009 - my build - cabinet pics 04/05 62May 23, 2011 8:32 pm Received a call from the tiler today regarding tiling the bath. I sort of had to make a decision on the spot which I hate - The hob was to be tiled in line with the shower (bath and shower run the length of one wall). But the tiler said to do that it would be a really wide edge and difficult to step over and normally it would be 'x' amount wide (Fairmont recess baths into the wall). So I decided to change it. Now I just hope while practical that it will look good too because it's not in line with the shower (but I was focussed on being practical when I made the choice!!). Anyway - the good thing is that the tiler is actually there and said he will do the work in 6-7 days (but of course he is going away in between) so should be finished 03 June. He commented that the flusher had been holding other trades up but was expecting him to be there today or tomorrow. I also spoke with the tiler and got to make the change to the splashback that I wanted which was a big relief (changed it so there is now no feature strip). Re: laura2009 - my build - cabinet pics 04/05 63May 28, 2011 4:48 pm Kitchen island is in now, the doors are up and window frames (reveals?) and skirting boards are on. http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab131/laura2009house/IMG_3125-1.jpg http://i857.photobucket.com/albums/ab131/laura2009house/IMG_3136.jpg Re: laura2009 - my build - kitchen island in 65May 30, 2011 2:19 pm That's why we are sticking with our date of 22 August and planning not to move out of the rental before the end of August - it doesn't take long to slip behind when tradies are MIA. Feel for you but it is still a quick build and looking so kool For info on our build: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=43093 Built the McLaren by Dechellis - slab down 22 Feb - handover 30 Aug 2011 - and gardens finished 9 Dec 2012!! Re: laura2009 - my build - kitchen island in 66May 30, 2011 2:19 pm Your kitchen is looking gorgeous I love the contrast of the dark island and the white cupboards. That must be so frustrating that PCI has been delayed. I guess at least they told you early and are keeping you in the loop. Fingers crossed they can stick to the next date. Re: laura2009 - my build - kitchen island in 67Jun 07, 2011 2:14 pm All the tiling to wet areas and porch has been completed now. Here's a couple of pics I took before grout was applied to some areas. I can see that the floor tiles have been centred to the entrance of the room but then they don't line up with the wall tiles. The wall tiles were done before the floor tiles. The bathrooms look a little masculine but I will bring colour and feminine touches with some art and accessories. Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 70Jun 10, 2011 5:14 pm Small update - Eaves have been started and it looks like the internal walls have been sanded because there is dust everywhere. I noticed on the south side of the house where some water collects after it rains, that the slab has salt crystals on it and looks a bit crumbly in some sections. Enough so that I could pick bits off where it looked crumbly. I'm not sure what this means or whether it has ongoing implications. We won't have stormwater done until after handover so the puddles around house will be there whenever it is wet. Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 71Jun 10, 2011 9:58 pm That's a worry. Have you spoken to the SS about it? Are you getting any building inspections done? Maybe now would be a good time. Though the words "crumbly" and "slab" tend to elicit panic. Matt's Brando: viewtopic.php?f=31&t=46340 Started March 30th 2011 PCI July 15th Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 73Jun 15, 2011 3:42 pm I forgot to take a photo of the concrete. I looks like lots of little airbubbles that have joined together and crumbled a bit. The eaves are complete and the alfresco ceiling is up (which seems to have lots of joins and I thought looked a bit average). I didn't have my camera so I haven't got a pic. No painting yet. Received a generic letter from Fairmont about PCI coming up and some info on the handover process. So close...! Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 74Jun 16, 2011 11:57 am Oh wow! That is absolutely smashing! I love the second colour on the island. Dont hold back on the pics /subscribed Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 75Jun 18, 2011 8:39 am The toilets, basins and taps etc have been fitted. I had already looked through the windows and I didn't notice they were there. Wasn't until I had a nosy in the skip to see what was in there and saw all the empty boxes (and a bunch of bread buns and a couple of cob loafs - bizarre) and went back to peak through the windows. We have clay soil and the neighbour at the back of our block has 4 giant poplars along the fence line (footings were over $30k). It will be a task improving the soil and I was thinking about whether we could cut the roots of that are over our boundary and a put root barrier in, to give our soil a fighting chance. I think I will need to seek professional advice on that though! Don't want a dying poplar falling on the children! Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 76Jun 18, 2011 2:54 pm You sound as blind as me! DH is always telling me off for not spotting what's been done on the house. I told him the other week that nothing had been done on the house and he had a look and said the electrician had actually been there as there was additional wiring installed. Unless it's obvious, I just don't notice these things. You poor thing regarding the clay soil. We have it too. You'll need a whole lot of gypsum. I don't know about cutting the roots of the neighbours trees. It might cause them to die, which would be nice but I don't think they'd be too happy. Maybe you could consider raised garden beds. You have just given me an 'Aha moment'. Raised garden beds would make the soil problem and watering so much easier to deal with. Re: laura2009 - my build - tiling pics 78Jun 19, 2011 12:14 pm Cant believe I only just found your thread. your house looks amazing, you must be pleased. We have gone for very similar colours in our ensuite (but vanities other way around-darker bench tops and lighter cupboards), I hope it doesnt look too 'masculine'. I love it though. I hope you are getting excited- the end is in sight. a pitty about not getting enough tradies our builders are experiening the same thing but soldiering on. I think the scheme is what some people would consider masculine but I think it's also classic and I like a strong look. I got my inspiration from american kitchens I had seen with dark kitchen islands and was always going to follow through with the white laminate or dark laminate for vanities cupboards. We will be having a glossy sand coloured tile in the living areas which will warm things up and bridge the dark browns and bright whites. There are two vans and a station wagon at the house today. I'm guessing it's painters so will definitely be going to visit this afternoon to see what progress has been made. Will take my camera too! 2 weeks today til PCI Thank you so much everyone.
