"Thingy" is my technical term for things I don't understand. I've never heard of it... what is it? How much? My dogs would love it from the sounds of it! Does it bang into walls? My dogs would love it from the sounds of it! Does it bang into walls? The Roomba is basically a robot vacuum cleaner. It's a thingie about the size of a pizza and about the height of a house brick. You can go from a fairly simple one (~$500) that you have to manually start to larger models that have specialised pet hair attachments and schedules, etc. They also have support for things like virtual walls and lighthouses that allow you to block the Roomba from venturing into rooms you don't want it to clean. It does bang into walls, but slowly and as soon as it does, it turns away and keeps cleaning. Essentially, it has both infrared and bump sensors that allow it to determine whereabouts in the room it is and how to wander about. Once it has finished (or it's dirt tray is full) it goes back to its charging station and beeps mournfully at you to be emptied. Harvey Norman sells them, but not all the models. It's worth popping in to see a demo though. I can't imagine not having one now, and we have two Dysons already (yes, we are gadget freaks). Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 63Oct 27, 2008 10:36 am I have so many questions about this!!!
Does it do the whole house sufficiently? Do you have to empty it often... or could it do the house without being emptied in the middle of the process? Does it leave sort of gap areas that it's missed? Is it good for the dog hair? That's my primary issue..... How long would it take to do about 30 sq? Oh I'm very, very interested. Just when I'd decided on a ducted vacuum.... Jo I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. Well, it can only do a single floor -- there isn't a stair-climbing version (yet!). If your dogs shed as much hair as ours, you probably will not be able to do the entire house in a single cleaning cycle. The dirt trap isn't that big on the standard models, though I believe there is a model with a larger dirt trap. Quote: Is it good for the dog hair? That's my primary issue..... Yes, it's quite good, but we run ours daily for this. We get home from work, feed the dogs and push the button and Roomba rushes off and does his thing. We then clean the trap after each cleaning cycle. The idea with Roomba is that you clean more often than normal, because you don't have to do any of the work yourself. There is also a pet-hair specific model if you have lots of pet hair to deal with. Quote: How long would it take to do about 30 sq? Not sure. Ours probably takes about an hour or so do a full clean of our downstairs area, which I reckon is about 100m2 or so, both carpet and tiles. Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 65Oct 27, 2008 12:29 pm the robot sounds unreal!!
It only looks small; I wouldn't have thpught smething that small would have much sucking power? (no comments about jockeys thanks Jo ) - usually I find I have to kind of lean on the vacuum piece to get maximum vacuum performance...but maybe that is just my yucky old vacuum cleaner or maybe it's just me! Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 66Oct 27, 2008 1:09 pm donuts It only looks small; I wouldn't have thpught smething that small would have much sucking power? It's not as good as our Dyson upright, sure. However, because we run it each day, it doesn't really need to be that powerful. Essentially, Roomba keeps the carpet clear of most of the obvious stuff, particularly the dog hair and we do a once-a-month Dyson mega-vacuum with the power brush head to get into the deeper piles. Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 67Oct 27, 2008 1:47 pm Woo.. i never know there is a robot vaccum available... it is a great idea... look like i have places to visit this weekend...

I don't know, just thought there might be a racing type comment for you to make in there somewhere? Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 72Nov 02, 2008 2:35 pm joles I'm looking into ducted vacuum systems. I've never had one before and know jack about them. Who has one? Which system is it? Would you recommend it? Pros and cons? Thanks, Jo I looked into this. The major brands I found were Lux, Beam and Silent Master. The downside is the powered head usually runs on a portable battery and not mains power. All portable batteries have limited life span and are expensive! The advantage is convenience, portability, noise reduction and minimising indoor air pollution. They seem relatively cost effective if you ignore the issue of the power head replacement. Not that just pure suction power won't get ground in dirt out of carpet. You need a power brush to 'beat' the dust out. As far as technical specifications go these units rate the performance by waterlift (static pressure), airflow and air-watts (pressure-flow product). I am not sure how useful these figures are for comparison. It's not clear from most manufacturers under what conditions they obtain the data. Then length and diameter of the ducting an hose all contribute to system resistances and the more powerful motor should win out. More importantly is the suction generated under a standard load i.e. vacuuming carpet when the unit is fully installed. Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 73Nov 02, 2008 3:15 pm We are getting one for our new house it's a from a shop here (SA) called Smart Systems, they also have security etc so we are getting that from them too, 2 friends of ours have this system and they are very pleased with them, they both say the dustpan kicker thing in the kitchen is the best thing they have got they even say the teenage kids like using it!!
I'm not sure if they are just in SA or other states but I'll give them a ring tomorrow find out, their SA number is (08) 83519868 Re: Ducted vacuuming systems. 75Dec 04, 2008 9:38 pm Cleishy Damn you all!! Just when I thought we were happy with everything and all extras and changes were final, now I want ducted vacuuming too.. and of course I need the kitchen kicker thingy.
