I like my ensuite being open..... When we built our first house I wasn't sure about it but now I would be without it. Must have a door on the toilet though! Dismal storage is the top of my dislike list, with not enough kitchen drawers being a close second! Also agree about not enough bench space an either side of the hot plate, my last house had it and it drove me NUTS!!!!! Gross. Poo on the handle....just saying. If people still build like that, then you deserve dysentery How did I know that poo would come into this one? Must be psychic. Most of us use toilet paper I guess. yes and surely if you are getting poo on a door handle if you don't have a basin in there, then aren't you also just transferring it to the basin mixer/tap instead if you do? So the purpose of washing your hands in the basin in the wc has just been defeated? Let alone the faecal matter flying around the room anyway if you flush without closing the lid. Uh oh this thread is deteriorating! Kiwi you are hilarious Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 52Jan 03, 2013 5:31 am but what if you are left handed great thread do not like rooms that are way too small that they cannot even be called a bedroom Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 53Jan 03, 2013 7:46 am What's wrong with colour bond fences?? Nearly everyone here has colour bond fences (newer houses) - except old areas of town which have old tin fences. I do agree about lack of kitchen bench space in newer houses - I think this is a direct result of the fad for island benches - you lose valuable bench space as oppossed to older style L shape kitchen which has benches on 3 sides in same amount of floor space - and usually the sink under the kitchen window, leaving unbroken bench on one side rather than bitty bits split by sink in island. Along with this, my other hate in many newer house designs is this fad for 'land locked' kitchens without windows. Nearly everyone here has colour bond fences (newer houses) - except old areas of town which have old tin fences. We've got colourbond fences and the build up of spiderwebs is driving us nuts. Didn't happen with our old timber fence. Apart from that I'm pretty happy but would have preferred a different colour to the green that our estate guidelines stipulate. Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 55Jan 03, 2013 8:07 am Its funny - the older I get the more my needs/wants change. When we were first married toilets in the ensuite worried me. Now I don't give it a second thought. If its necessary you can always use the main toilet. However - I do not like toilets up against a bedroom wall - ie the main toilet against Bedroom 2. You have a narrow wall between you and visitors ... Its easy to plan it differently. I quite like our bedroom away from the others. Gives us all privacy. I hate long hallways - waste of space IMO. Love lots of light. I care about aspect. And - I like being able to set up a breeze-way in the house. Nearly everyone here has colour bond fences (newer houses) - except old areas of town which have old tin fences. Quite a few things I dislike about colourbond fences: They get hot They don't "breathe" like a timber fence does One decent hit with a soccer ball and they buckle They look really bad when they fade. And to be honest they can get that "housing commission" look after a while especially when they start to buckle and fade and get graffitied. My preference is a well made timber fence or a good masonry wall (STCA) On the kitchen issues you make some very good points. I agree that the landlocked designs are poor. Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 57Jan 03, 2013 8:34 am I seriously dislike the resort feel ensuite. Cut out walls, no doors, complete lack of privacy. Who wants steam throughout the bedroom? Furthermore I don't want to be awaken by my partner on my days off work. And then if you find a design that's not open, you still have to upgrade to get the door... The ensuite door should be standard... Also what's with the clear glass windows in ensuites and bathrooms as standard, another thing that should be standard. I agree with the lack of storage in 4/5 bedroom homes especially linen cupboards! I have a land locked kitchen in my new build... Hoping I like it when i move in, it separated living spaces, otherwise I would have one big living space Built a Hawthorne 31 with EB nessjeffdreamhouse.blogspot.com.au Building an investment now with New Living homes... My preference is a well made timber fence or a good masonry wall (STCA) Colourbond fences are a must in areas with strong winds, timber would fall over under same conditions. IMO it's a cost effective alternative to masonry and I like that you can match the clb colours to your house colours. Also we always plant shrubs/bushes on the fence line to soften the look of the fence and add "depth" to garden plantings. Also timber splits and looks scabby unless it's painted and the maintenance is a lot more. But we're all different...! I would really appreciate if if you can complete the poll about windows, if you have a story I would love to hear it.
