Have a family member who has a giant plasma screen on his kitchen wall but I think that is a bit much. But I would be more happy to cook or wash up if I could still see what is on TV or could watch a dvd. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. Not sure how else that could be designed though to minimise the double-width corridor. BARKER : I think my biggest concern is the layout of the kitchen. I specifically want the island bench to be a bench only. I know it's a big trend at the moment to put the sink or stove on the island, but I've been there and done that and I didn't like it. But, at a minimum, we need bench space for the coffee machine, knife block and the utensil jar + room for the toaster and kettle, preferably. I just don't see where all that stuff would go on the southern wall without looking cramped and untidy. Also, not sure where the buffet would sit - I don't think there is enough room in the dining room, maybe? Ideas? 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 364Aug 01, 2010 1:18 am Pete I don't think the southern bench in kitchen would look too cluttered, but there are some things you could do to make it more spacious. 1: Have underbench since as it increases the appearance of benchtop space. 2: Looks like you have a wall oven. Put in an underbench oven and you could then have that area as an appliance cabinet. Then toaster and kettle when not used get slid inside and untidiness gone (also hides the powerpoint). To maximise spaciosness, an appiance cabinet with opening facing along bench as opposed to facing outwards means a thinner profile and more benchspace. Also easier to pull them out onto bench and then shove them back in. In terms of the buffet, it could go on the northern wall between dining and lounge with the window above. Although depends on how big a window you would want. It would be a big squished in the dining room. Building tip No. 3: A raft slab will not get you down a river. I think it is worth taking a look at mine for potential storage ideas as far as appliance cabinets go. Personally, I'd extend the pantry to where that small, angled cupboard goes to, and extend the kitchen cabinetry along that wall to form an appliance area. Here is the blog post explaining some of what we have done. http://house.yeoh.info/?p=580 As for the double width hallway to the bathroom, I'd look at something like this: Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Assuming you like it (which you are perfectly entitled not to), this transfers your wasted hallway space into a little more luxury in the bathroom. No natural light into toilet now, so you may want to look at potential of skylight for here. Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 366Aug 02, 2010 7:50 am Thank you SomeWoman - excellent suggestions. I'm not opposed to having the internal toilet but my husband is yet to be convinced, although he does like the idea of more room in the bathroom. Loved your suggestion about extending the pantry and making an appliance area that goes back into the pantry. Great idea and I'll see what we can pull off. Your kitchen looks fabulous by the way! Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 368Aug 02, 2010 1:55 pm ![]() We are in the process of started doing our first plans for our first home. Would be very grateful to get some feedback on our plans specially the passive solar aspect. I think if you would like feedback on the passive solar aspect, you need to include details such as the north-south aspect for your block and if known, where the prevailing winds come from. That would certainly help. EDIT : realised afterwards there was a great big arrow at the top of the drawing. Thanks 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! We're in the design phase .... Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 369Aug 02, 2010 1:58 pm Wow Qq, I really like the plan! Very well laid out, good passive solar with main living areas facing North (am assuming the big arrow is pointing to solar north). Seems like a pretty big house. Only thing I would change would be to remove the door from pantry into the laundry as I don't think that it is necessary and takes up space in the pantry. But the pantry is pretty big so is not going to dramatically impace upon shelf space. Would make it a cavity slider if I could to not block shelves when it is open. Barker: thanks for the tip. Will include that in. that infact wil give us a wall in the laundry that we can use. thanks. Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 371Aug 02, 2010 5:00 pm P&P, the arrow at the top left of the plan points to north. The covered patio area covers north/west aspect. Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 372Aug 02, 2010 11:13 pm Hi Qqwe, love the design. One of the things I always find problematic though is a WC upstairs that doesn't have a basin handy. I really think you could pinch some robe space from bed 2 and put a washbasin in front of the WC up there. That way it's still useable when someones having a shower or using the bath up there. Otherwise, people just don't wash their hands... my preference only. SK A slimline basin could probably fit in as it is or else just bring the door further out and lengthen the WC and then it would fit easily. Agree about needing somewhere to wash hands in the toilet. I like it!! Could use a teeny little bit of tweaking, but this is basically what I would do. Extend the shower to the full wall, enough room to put in another linen on the end of the shower facing the vanity area. Lots more storage. Simple, usable. Beautiful! There are definitely a number of options available for that bathroom area. My brain is just incapable of thinking of them at the moment ![]() Re: Custom Design floor plan thread post them here!! 376Aug 03, 2010 9:08 pm Shell83, that's a great idea, thank you! Will be definitely taking that idea to Pete (hubby). So, you and Somewoman are giving me some great pics. What software are you using? I looked into getting Photoshop but that seems a little exxy for private use. Any suggestions for a similar product that won't break the bank? (Or is free? even better) Thanks again. I am loving the suggestions, they are fantastic and it's great to see what someone else sees with a fresh perspective. 2010, June : Land bought (1700sqm, battleaxe block). That's it so far! If you google for gimp you will find it. It is the open source (and completely FREE) version of photoshop. I use it professionally for work as well as for playing around with house plans, and it absolutely rocks. Available for mac, linux or 'doze.
