Deemaree Kyndylan Capers: viewtopic.php?f=36&t=46852 My blog: http://www.sufficientlysufficient.blogspot.com/ Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 243Jan 31, 2013 4:29 pm No. 1 for me is the open retreat or rumpus room that's almost always the first you see when walking upstairs to the 1st level of a 2 storey house. Why? It's open and central to bedrooms meaning a TV will be heard not only in the bedrooms but from downstairs also. You can hear noise from downstairs if you want some quite time in this room. You can't see what your kids are doing as they aren't viewable from the kitchen / living area downstairs. Alternatively you can put double doors on this room to close it off and make it usable, while not totally closing off the space totally (leave doors open when not used). No. 2 Bi fold doors to alfresco or doors without fly screens. I know they look great in display homes.. but paying up to 20k for doors, which mean you get to share your house with everything living outside seems totally ridiculous to me. I have friends who spent 16k on timber doors, they NEVER leave them open, which completely defeats the purpose of them. Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 244Jan 31, 2013 4:40 pm elle Fridge recess that isnt deep enough and leaves the fridge not aligned with the cupboards Doesn't a fridge have to stick out a bit otherwise the doors won't open properly... But agree, standard recesses aren't big enough to fit French Door or side by sides. We actually designed our kitchen around our monster fridge - 910mm wide & 760mm deep. elle WIP is for food... well it is at my place ! i suppose if you had a massive one... If it's just for food it's not big enough Marto54 No. 2 Bi fold doors to alfresco or doors without fly screens. Could not agree more - and the fly screen solution for bi-fold isn't that great. Thats why I went with stackers. If it's just for food it's not big enough Maybe not but Id rather have more space in my ensuite than a large pantry Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 246Jan 31, 2013 5:26 pm millsy_mcleod05 I am at build stage and after weeks of scrutinizing the original plan we did a number of changes: *added a sink to the WC - can't stand the thought of going through to the bathroom to wash hands....germs everywhere eww! * pantry extension * garage extension * WIR entry was from bathroom and we changed it to outside, don't care if hubby needs to run from shower, he is dry by then. * doors to ensuite - hate no doors. Hey Missy! I was curious, how much did they charge you to add a sink to the WC? I really love having a sink with the toilet so as not to have to go into the large bathroom to quickly wash hands. It's nicer for visitors too IMO. HD Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 247Feb 01, 2013 9:25 am ay I agree wiht everything on Joles list. I wish we had made our main entryway/passageway wider. DH was not keen to do so. Heck I got it a tiny bit wider than ti was originally but it could do with another 500-1000mm. It's long and dark as we don't have sidelights at the front door. Something else DH didn't want. Given that we keep the door at the end closed most of the time it means when you come in from outside it's very dark in there unless the loungeroom window blind is part way up. We are going to have to put a skylight in at some stage. My very first blog http://benham33.blogspot.com.au/ Re: Whats your Biggest hate in New building plans 249Feb 01, 2013 5:51 pm Having read this thread with glee (for most of it, anyway) ... I'm pleased to say that the majority of what has been listed here we have included in the plans for our new home. Definitely pays to do your homework because quite frankly, the project home builder designers are certainly not on your side ... I wonder sometimes what kind of house *they* live in ! Anyway, so as to keep this brief ... our suggestion is to make the built-in wardrobes deeper. The standard is around 500mm. Go get a few coat hangers and your favourites and see how many of them are scraping the doors ... We have increased ours to 700mm. Think she means her plans have all the things that are seriously necessary that plans often leave out. My plans had a dead spot in hallway approaching kitchen. As in no light, electrical or natural. That was pretty dumb, but I'm doing my own downlights anyway. My recent pet hate is doors that don't have magnetic stoppers, so they slam in the wind. On the corridor thing though, I am probably the opposite. I go nuts when I see a plan with wasted corridor space. Multiple purpose please or else it is wasted space. Unless you have a budget in the wind. Each to their own ...
