Browse Forums Building A New House Re: Building the Santorini Grande with Masterton 21Jun 30, 2009 8:12 am Lizzy, Welcome to the forum and congrats on deciding to build. Question for you. What made you decide against Greenway as the feature brick? It is a very distinct brick and you don't see too many being used. We at one stage were going to build the whole house from it. We loved Greenway but we were going to use it as a feature brick on the front portico. Our facade is a contemporary style and I just didn't think that the turned/rounded brick would suit the style of the house - particularly as the rest of the house was to be in a wirecut brick. We LOVED the colour of Greenway though and if there was a smooth faced or wire cut brick in a comparable colour we would have jumped at it. There was one at the PGH site in Schofields, I think it was called Charcoal, but the brick had been discontinued. I have seen some pictures on the PGH site though of a house built with full Greenway and it looks absolutely gorgeous but the style is more a traditional or Federation style house. Have you decided on a different brick or are you still thinking of going with Greenway? We had our tiling appointment with Don's Tiles a couple of weeks ago and have agreed to have them (or Masterton) do our floor tiling. Our total tiling quote came to around $13,000. This included all our floor tiling to the bottom floor ($8,000ish); tiling to the ceiling in the main bathroom and ensuite ($3,500) and tiling to 1.2m in both the powder room and WC (around $1,500). Our floor tiles are a 400mmx400mm porcelain tile in a colour called "Breeze Cocoa". We area floor tiles are "mocha" and wet area walls are all a true white in a 600mmx20mm tile. On Monday we had our colours appointment and made the following choices: This is our front door - Nexus Nex10 which will be painted in Monument with Cathedral obscured glass and Cathedral sidelights on both sides: Internal paint colour is Taubmans Ocean Pebble except for powder room and WC where it will be white. Our bathroom, ensuite and powder room vanities are moulded top floating vanities with cabinetry in Laminex Stipple Cocoa. This is our kitchen elevation plan. I'm so excited about the kitchen! Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Kitchen benchtop is 40mm Quantum Quartz in Mocha. Cabinetry is Polytech Createc in Malt Gloss. Kickboards are Polytech Carbon Micro Matt. We originally had frosted glass cabinets at the top but for practical purposes decided to change them to solid doors. I love the look of the frosted glass but I just know being able to see something that's not pristinely ordered behind the glass will drive me nuts! So solid doors it is. Oh, and we have pot drawers! Yay!! Splashback is in a white horizontal tile - best of a bad lot of choices so hoping it will turn out okay. The original SMEG oven that we'd agreed on has been discontinued so we're getting this one. The C9GXMA. We also selected our carpet which Masterton will lay, via Accent Carpets. We chose Augusta Lane by Beaulieu in "Weathered Acorn". Here is the picture from their website but the colour is actually nothing like this, it's a warmer brown rather than what comes up on my monitor as poo brown! I realise there seems to be a lot of brown there generally, but in person the colours looked more neutral which is what we were hoping for so that we could be a bit more creative with our furnishings and colour accents. Let's hope it actually turns out that way! Now we're just waiting for our electrical appointment and council approval. I called our Council a couple of weeks ago and was told that they had been all ready to sign off on the approval and then Masterton sent them an amended hydraulics plan for our stormwater system so they have to have the engineers re-assess the new plan. Hopefully it won't take too much longer. Edit: forget to mention that we also got the ducted vacuum with the VacPan. How could I forget the VacPan?!? I'm really glad you like the Ocean Pebble because we were so unsure of it. We were hoping to go with something deeper but the colour we wanted (Beige Chalk) wasn't in their standards. We are in council too at the moment, hope to be out of there next week.Never know we may have our builds start around the same time Re: Building the Santorini Grande with Masterton 27Aug 28, 2009 9:56 am Thanks kkatt. If only you knew how much hand-wringing we went through with those damn colour selections!! I'm hoping it all comes together in the house. It's so hard to make choices in the abstract without knowing how the whole thing will look! We too have doubts about how it will all come together. The closer you get to the build the more you want to change things and see something that you like more. Good luck with council, can't believe you are back to square one with them. R Re: Building the Santorini Grande with Masterton 29Aug 29, 2009 7:18 am Thanks R&R - I can't believe it either. *sigh* I suppose the saving grace is that we still have stuff to do with Masterton so that's not holding the process up. I also love the fact that you're going for a different front door! So many of us have gone for the Hume XN5! Anyway, fingers crossed that everything comes through Council quickly for you! As with lots of things, my husband and I couldn't agree on a front door. We made our selection as a compromise and then neither of us were sure about it! But I think now it will be fine. We want to put a security screen door in too but it will be hard to do without hiding the feature glass! You know I've been second-guessing myself constantly over our colours, it's nice to know I wasn't completely out of touch. As for the front door, we didn't actually get that feature glass - we got a mottled cathedral glass which matches our sidelights on both sides. Re: Building the Santorini Grande with Masterton 35Nov 08, 2009 10:57 pm A long overdue update... although now that I'm writing it out, there's not much to tell. We accepted our Final Tender on 30 September and expect to get our contracts tomorrow (Monday). We got our keys to our rental home today. Fortunately, it is literally across the road and three doors up. We started moving some of our boxes in today and hopefully we will be fully moved in by the weekend. Actually we must be fully moved in on the weekend since our house is being demolished on the following Monday! I'm still somewhat confused about the necessary timing around signing the contracts and getting our bank's LOC and Masterton getting the construction certificate. Hopefully it will all fall into place with enough time for Masterton to start working on our site before Christmas! The way we've worked it out, we get almost a month after demolition before the Christmas shut down period so we're hoping for a slab in that time but that might be wishful thinking. It's all quite bad timing though... I'm at a work offsite for two days during demolition week so will miss most of the house coming down. I really wanted to be here but it's probably for the best. Despite how completely over the old house we are, I wouldn't be surprised if I shed a tear or two watching it get pulled down... That's my thinking too... would be great if we did but probably not too likely.
