On Friday, 14 months after buying my land, I finally had my demolition day. Here are some before photos, Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ By the way, the newspaper is for my no dig weed free garden at the front. Takes ages to pull out the weeds then lay the newspaper, then put mulch on top but it works a treat -chemical free. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ And I'm keeping the hollow tree trunks because there are possums in living there, and I'd rather them live there than in my new roof! I'm going to grow native hedging that will obscure the trunks. http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q9/louiserhodes/Building%20Process%20Pennant%20Hills/theblock3.jpg And here, the result of $8k! http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q9/louiserhodes/Building%20Process%20Pennant%20Hills/theblockafter.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q9/louiserhodes/Building%20Process%20Pennant%20Hills/theblockafter2.jpg http://i132.photobucket.com/albums/q9/louiserhodes/Building%20Process%20Pennant%20Hills/theblockafter4.jpg So exciting! Peg out should be this week, then stage 1 site prep. Then I need to put in the retaining wall down the left hand side (to protect the neighbours house) if the fencers ever get back to me with a quote Then its all steam ahead! Heh heh Not quite Bali, its Pennant Hills in the North West of Sydney. We're tucked in a little valley of Blue Gum forest hence the lush greenery. Its hard to see, but there's quite a slope up to the back, 2m worth, and then another 2m up to the backyard. That reminds me, must hassle the retaining wall guys! Can you explain some more to me about the newspaper garden - I don't understand what would stop the weeds growing through the newspaper as it is basically organic itself? You just hadn't thrown the local dero's out that morning Seriously Good to hear the organics gardening path is being followed. I acheived the same result with 40 bales of Pea Straw which stopped all my weeds last winter. Just be careful with the paper - it can matt up a bit and stops all the oxygen from getting to your soil making it a bit rancid underneath. Great location and happy building. Steve To true. And while on the subject, hopefully people aren’t still lining their gardens with black plastic before the soil???? Bad move!!! Its mostly fill, so I'll need to get some nice soil when I'm ready to plant.
Dan, all of Hornsby Shire is "bush fire prone"! My patch is nice and lush, green and moist so I'm not concerned. Plus the neigbour has a creek! I'll also comply with all the Rural Fire Service suggestions. Dynamic Duo, see if you can find a copy of Esther Dean's No Dig Gardening. Basically the newspaper acts as a temporary block to weeds by not allowing light in. It breaks down over a few months, but by then the heat from the mulch has hopefully killed the weed seeds remaining. I've taken photos of myself with many things on our house, mounds of dirt, piles of steel, palletts of bricks etc but never with a portaloo!! Actually we don't even have our 'own' portaloo as our house is in a group of house/land packages all being done by same builder, only one portaloo for the lot (8 houses so far in various stages of construction.) Re: Good things come to those who wait (and wait!) 19Mar 23, 2008 4:53 pm I hope you didn't go in there!!!! Wooo hoo, can’t wait to see your development, its such a lush area!
