Browse Forums Building A New House 1 May 22, 2009 12:13 pm We will soon be having our slab poured. (hopefully). I have been browsing in the shops and seen so many things that I would like to buy/lay buy/ put away etc. for our new house. My question is this : Did you buy/lay buy/ put away etc. anything for your house BEFORE it was built. Is it dangerous because the 'things' might not be right for the house once it's built, or is it a good idea beacause by the time the house is built there will a) be no damn money left for 'stuff' and b) these things most probably will not be available due to trends and seasons? www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 2May 22, 2009 12:22 pm Yes, yes, yes.... My spare room is full of things I have bought, but there is a whole thread on it here - http://forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=15014 Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 3May 22, 2009 12:24 pm We did. So far we are only up to the framing / roofing stage and already have in storage:- * Two fridges * Stove & rangehood * Kitchen sink & faucet (I actually have three sinks but don't like two of them now) * Caesarstone for the kitchen and laundry * All the toilets for the house (6 in total) * All my laundry cupboard setup including stainless steel sink * A massive rosewood wall unit for the study * Three huge reclining chaises for the home theatre * Timber and granite bar - complete with overhead cupboards / sink / tap for the garage As well as all of our furniture that has been in storage for the past 2yrs. If we see it, love it and it is the right price we buy it. Some things are worth waiting for. Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 4May 22, 2009 12:26 pm I'm having exactly the same dilemma! It's particularly hard when all of the half yearly sales are approaching. I think it's OK to buy some 'things'. I hope to get a few bits and pieces now because, as you say, there won't be any cash left later!!! I'm currently looking at a rug (because it's on sale and might not be around in 6 months time), home theatre seating (also on special), new bedroom furniture and general kitcheny stuff. I think I'll leave the decorative stuff until we've moved in just in case it doesn't "go". I guess in the worst case scenario there's always eBay or the Trading Post if what you've bought doesn't fit/match! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 5May 22, 2009 12:30 pm Yes! how could you not?? I'm so looking forward to putting all of my new purchases in my new house... I have almost re-furnished the whole house. Imagine how overwhelmed you would be if you had to shop for new things and move. Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 6May 22, 2009 12:38 pm I have bought two lamps for my bedroom & haven't even signed contracts for the land or house yet!!! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 7May 22, 2009 12:42 pm We have bought some things because we were concerned that prices were rising because of the falling $A, now we are not so sure since it's a bit higher, we did do some things though, some store are willing to store items for you for a while, we have done this with a new bed/dining suite/TV unit etc, also Miele are great they are keeping the items we bought and when we give them the nod they will come and install, we will probably be in Late Nov/Early Decamber Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 8May 22, 2009 12:46 pm We've only just finalised the plans for our house and we probably won't start building until September or October. We've bought all of our light fittings for the house and started buying furniture. We're buying stuff now so we don't have to outlay so much cash at the one time when we move in. We won't be buying electrical items like washing machine, TV, fridge, etc. until we move in as alot of these sort of products get updated regularly and some only come with a 1 year warranty. Also based on a discussion on here not long ago depending on where it's stored it may not be insured. And if you are storing a lot of stuff at home you may want to check your contents coverage...an interesting point...if you're storing a Meile oven but have a perfectly functioning older oven in the kitchen - which one gets covered in case of a claim... and I'm confused by these types of comments... ...be no damn money left for 'stuff' If you have budget for it now, won't you have the money after the build... Oh...and warranties...if your moving in six months you've effectively lost 6 months of warranty... mmm....donuts Homer Simpson 1956- Links: Site Costs Ready Reckoner | H1 Addiction Medical Advice | Château TDL: The Backyard Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 10May 22, 2009 12:51 pm We've bought a heap of stuff on sale, and still want/need to buy some more at mid year sales. The only thing that bothers me is the more stuff we buy = the more stuff we have to move when we finally move into the new house! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 11May 22, 2009 12:52 pm Im having a tupperware party in June to prepare for our move in (August-Sept). I really want to start on furniture (we are starting from scratch) but we have no where to store it if the house isnt ready in time. I think its a great idea to be organised. If my partner will let me. Im really looking forward to the mid year sales. Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 12May 22, 2009 1:10 pm Thanks everyone for your replies. I didn't see that thread fitnhealthy and just had a look at it and found that I am not so silly for wanting to buy things now. The Warranty issue wasn't something that I had thought of so that was a great bit of info. Thanks. I saw a few light fittings for the kids and some decor ideas in Freedom so I may just try to get them and store them. Someone mentioned the issue of having more things to move when you move back into the house, this is a bit of a pain. MMM, yes well if i see something that can be easily stored and moved and I can afford it at the time, I will get it. Yaay. I will blame the bills on you guys, hahahha Thanks Homeoner's~! Sorry about doubling up in the thread subject. Still happy to hear any more comments.. www.themaxbuild.blogspot.com forum.homeone.com.au/viewtopic.php?f=31&t=20717&start=300 www.leahspaperpassion.blogspot.com Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 13May 22, 2009 1:17 pm We arent starting to build until october and I have already bought heaps lol This is both of ours first move out of home so we don't have anything to begin with! So far I have all the sheets, a quilt, an electric blanket, all the saucepans and frypans, cutlery, dinnerset, knife block, chopping boards, glasses, utensils, tuperware, baking trays, towels and a few decorative things! I am obssessed with buying things but so far its all been average 50% As someone said no electrical stuff cuz of the warranty! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 14May 22, 2009 1:20 pm I have bought some basic bits and pieces but would be concerned as others have said about warranties etc. on major items. The other consideration is when some people have said they have had to choose different colours as the colours they originally selected way back when they did their selections have been discontinued. Some have said they used this opportunity to change colours and others have been forced to change colour schemes as there have not been any other colours that blend with what they have already chosen. This could affect the choice of items that you buy in the meantime. Just food for thought. Good luck and happy shopping!! Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 15May 22, 2009 1:36 pm We were also concerned about the warranty issue so we are using the new microwave and the new espresso machine in the rental place all the others the warranty only starts when Miele deliver it, I too thought about the Kleenmaid issue and not that I know anything about Miele and their financial stability I hope they are okay. I forgot to say we also bought our tiles about 100m2 and are storing them because we got a good deal and didn't want to miss out if they decided to discontinue the colour, we also added a fair few extra in case of breakage on top of what they recommend for wastage. Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 16May 22, 2009 1:42 pm We brought LOTS before we moved in, all the little things for the kitchen (usually thats about taste and not colors), a few furniture items and even a pool table, figured to get things that we wanted before we moved in cause once we were in, the money doesnt go as far! We had our color tag with us when we looked at furniture and it seems to match! BUT the downside, MORE to move!! but least when you move in everything is there and ready to go Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 17May 22, 2009 2:21 pm If you buy too many things before you move in you lose time off warranties, theres the chance of damage when storing or moving and you cram that good feeling of buying new things. If you spread out the purchasing of new things you will get that good feeling for quite some time. If not, you will be looking for a new Dream House to buy new things for much sooner than later. Its always a good feeling when you buy new things. Why not stretch that time of buying new things even longer? and plus, you will know whether it will fit or not. You want to buy furniture to fit the house. Not fit the house around the furniture I drive past furniture shops all the time. They really suck me in when they say "MASSIVE WEEKEND SALE". I've been waiting the whole 5 days for that. Villina with Trend facade Sydney Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 18May 22, 2009 2:25 pm I've bought heaps of stuff. But none were impulse buys. I researched, knew what I wanted and when something just right came along at the right price, I bought it. A couple of lounges, the dinign setting and the bar stools were the main ones. We have four living areas and a retreat that will need couches/lounges. I wanted at least a couple of those areas sorted for when we move in. I leave you to fend for yourself, figure things out yourself. I've decided my next investment is going to be a storage business. Seems like there will be lots of potential business hahahah Villina with Trend facade Sydney Re: Should I buy STUFF for the house before it's built? 20May 22, 2009 2:40 pm I'm trying not to buy anything - less I have to move!! Plus what if it doesn't go with the new place properly? Although if something is real bargain or I'm unlikely to find it again I might end up getting it, but I'm not moving out of my parents place or anything so I have everything I need to live, but I will want nicer things once I move lol! I'm also going to have more available cash once I'm in my house than what I will have from the end of this month until when I move. With my rent going up and mortgage interest payments starting, next month I'm going to be forking out about $350 more than what my full entire mortgage repayments will be and that's only going to increase as the build progesses Plus, I should be moving around my birthday and then there is Christmas, so bring on the vouchers!!
