Hi Ahuang,
been reading your blog, very interesting read. We have been through a few display home and quite like the idea of timber floors instead of the tradtional tiles. We have noticed though that some floors feel VERY soft and other the timber is prone to heel marks.

One house had these little pock marks all over it from womens heels.

When doing your research did you find out anything about which type of floor is best to resist marks, pocks etc?

wow Ahuang, your floors look AWESOME!!
One question please, how did yo get your timber floors to sit flush with you tiled and carpeted areas? This is my main problem with regards to wanting a timber floor!

I don't have carpet, only tiled ones.
Before everything starts, decide on what you want, then research on the thickness of each material and make sure it's communicated with all parties. Then you can work out an acceptable height for the joint area.

I really want timber floors but we will have carpet and tiles also. We will most likely build with Metricon. I asked whether they can set down the timbered area by 30mm or raise the other flooring by 20mm but they informed me that they are not able to do anything to the slab, everything must be level. I'm not sure what else to do!!

Please help!!

Not sure if you can change the slab so accurately for each area.

In our case, we know the ground floor timber floor will be the thickest (40mm), so we asked the tiler to increase their height to match it and also ask the builder to cut the bottom part of all ground floor doors (which they didn't do it properly, a few left as 35mm or 30mm and our timber floor guys have to cut it again

).

I guess carpet would be a bit difficult as it's very hard to increase/decrease the thickness like the tiles.

"everything must be leveled"? well, our upstairs bathroom door area wasn't leveled at all. The tiler from our builder still put in 40mm for the tiles upstairs. But as upstair timber floors don't have the hardwood installed under it, so it's only about 20mm thick. Therefore our bathrooms upstairs are all about 20mm higher than our timber floor...

One other thing, your builder is not the only company in the world who can do your flooring, shop around for more options! You will be surprised how much you can save and you can get a lot more choices!

Yea I would have thought that you can raise the tiles abit to make it sit flush with the timber floor. I dont know what to do about the carpet. half our house will be with carpet and the other half with timber floors.

I've been told that if the timber is glued to the concrete, it's abit lower. Is there a reason why you opted for the timber battens instead of direct glue?

I've also heard that some timber floors have a drummy, echoey sound when you walk on it, how are yours?

I am not an expert on this, but I heard that for the type of timber board we chose, it needs something under it to make it last longer, either hardwood or big board, don't know what's the correct name. Suggest to talk to visit a few timber floor company and they should be able to provide you the correct answer.

Sound wise, yes, occasionary it happened unfortunately.
