Kind of modern country design around passive solar principles. We are using rammed earth as a feature wall along the spine for thermal mass. Good luck with your build ..... You'll probably get the rammed earth a lot cheaper over there Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 25Sep 07, 2010 9:09 am Redd We're about to do a custom build on a rural block in Vic. I'll be sure to follow your progress! Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 26Sep 08, 2010 5:08 pm Got the final invoice for the contour and feature survey: $500 inc. GST. We we're quoted $700-$800. Good to see there are some honest operators out there. PM me if you would like to know who we used. Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 27Sep 09, 2010 12:00 pm Hey Dan, Buildme here, Thristy put me onto this Thread of yours as I was asking questions in the Owner Builders Section. Your project sounds exciting, I am at the very early stages at looking into Rammed Earth Construction, not too many if any to help Doing it yourself on the internet. Would you know as a guess what cost per Square Rammed Earth would work out at in building a home ? any info would be great. Will follow your adventure from now on. Cheers & Good luck. Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 28Sep 10, 2010 9:58 am buildme Would you know as a guess what cost per Square Rammed Earth would work out at in building a home ? Hi buildme. I do not know exactly the cost per square metre at this stage, but will be sure to post any costs as we go. The one thing I can say is that our builder (and many other rammed earth builders) stand by the theory that it should cost roughly the same as double brick including the plastering and painting etc. that goes into a double brick home. The big builders will tell you the opposite however. We were told by a well known country builder that rammed earth would cost double. But in reality this is more due to the fact that they don't want to build in rammed earth. It just doesn't fit into their business model. The brick companies are very powerful and you don't have to spend too much time around the building industry to realise it is one big 'back scratching' affair. Anyway good luck, and keep an eye on this thread as I will be detailing the costs of pretty much every single thing it takes to get our house up! Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 29Sep 10, 2010 9:55 pm darn i wish i'd known a rammed earth builder when we were first building then. I's have loved to have built with rammed earth. Funnily enough my wife has mentioned wanting some type of timber bench top in the kitchen. We will be sure to take a look in the pine direction Sounds like we may get our first look at the house design later this week. In the meantime we have been costing up our kitchen appliances. Due to my wives place of employment we are able to get Smeg products at a 40% discount so it will be interesting to see how that stacks up against cheaper brands at standard consumer prices? Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 34Sep 14, 2010 10:30 am Hi Dan,would be nice if you were up to the stage of wonting a bench now,coz this 1 is GORGEOUS. $450 in a second hand shop, but you would need a crane nearly to move it,it not solid, its SOLID,with a big chopping board of granite on it would be Sorry, going on about this piece, but i would love it! Well done on the saving's with your kitchen stove etc, every bit helps. That's my thing ATM,supplied very basic stove, wonting to up-grade,may decide to leave the stove out & supply our own. Anyway good luck on the plans,i'm WAITING,WAITING to see them Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! We just bought our block up there on Waterwheel Road and will be building once we've paid it off, so hopefully we'll be there in five years or so. It's going to be such a nice change from being down in the flatlands with thousands of neighbours! I love the idea of rammed earth, but we have a wheelchair to allow for and the total cost of design etc etc would be too high. We did find a design by Domain we like and they have experience with wheelchair modification so it should be good anyway. Gotta be better than our current 100 sqm place we're in now. Can we pick your brain as you go along with your build? Site works have us a bit worried after hearing a figure of over $80 000. Looking forward to your progress! Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 36Sep 14, 2010 3:25 pm Welcome Waterwheel, found you coz of your tag name. You didn't happen to buy a block on the corner did you Don't let the stories on site works scare you, some blocks are worse than others & $80 grand is way over the top. cheers Block bought 1st RBC X! 2nd Ventrua,Keeper! Site works have us a bit worried after hearing a figure of over $80 000. Hi Waterwheel, feel free to pick my brain as much as you like. I don't know much at the moment but I am sure I will gather a fair bit of information over the coming months. And yes Kerry-Ann is right, site works appear to be one of those things where cost can vary quite dramatically. So do your homework and you should (hopefully!) be able to get the site developed for a more affordable price. Dan.....Best friend.....Buddy......Pal.......CAN U PLEASE BE MY BEST FRIEND You lucky duck. We're going for the smeg freestanding oven but sure wont be getting 40% off K.A, we're allowed to put our oven in after handover but we're gonna get pricings on it anyway......even if its just for a laugh Welcome Waterwheel. Another one in the vicinity. My parents and brother designed their houses when they built for my niece (who is no longer with us ) and she was in a wheelchair. All the passages and doorways were really wide and they had a winch kind of thing in the bathroom. Dont know if you need that but their houses are very open and look great with the wider spaces. Unfortunately they built in Adelaide so I cant suggest builders for here. Good luck with it all Re: Dan's Rammed Earth Home in the Bedfordale Hills, Perth W 39Sep 14, 2010 8:57 pm thirsty Dan-yool Due to my wives place of employment we are able to get Smeg products at a 40% discount so it will be interesting to see how that stacks up against cheaper brands at standard consumer prices? The name was a bit of a giveaway wasn't it! We picked the only flat spot left, next to that strange little circular park. We were hoping (ha ha....) the siteworks would be less than on the long thin sloping one we wanted. It's looking lovely atm, all green and weedy. Got to get out with a mower when it dies down. Really looking forward to that........ Hi thirsty. We're going for a ride in shower, kind of a huge hobless thingy so he can just roll around the whole area in his shower chair. We're knocking a wall out and putting the loo in with it so he can be more independant and my back doesn't give out on me entirely. I'm going to start a thread about access anyway so I'll stop hijacking Dans thread. I'll put up the plans when I figure out how to. It's good to know someone else is going through all this first and is willing to warn us in advance of anything horrible! Fingers crossed for all of us. Thanks again Simeon for being so elaborate. Appreciate it. Its gives us a very idea. Kind Regards 4 4256 We already paid for somfy motors for the blinds.
