Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Oct 23, 2009 10:13 am HI All, We are thinking of building in point cook and noticed phone lines / tv points and internet connection points are not standard as part of the Base price of the contract. Of all the builders we have seen, they dont offer a lot. Currently, I have broadband at my home. Router connected to a phone line and wherever I am in my house, I could use internet through wireless. wud it be the same in my new home? Do I need to get some provision in the contract for setting up the phone lines or internet lines? Also, is it a good idea to have a phone line and a tv point in the second bedroom too alongwith the normal points in the master bedrooms / study and living? Re: Phone Lines and Internet Connection 2Oct 23, 2009 10:55 am You will be extremely lucky if you can get ADSL in Point Cook. And yes, organise with the builder for your phone/tv points and phone connection to the house (cabling and trenching) to be done as it is a lot easier 'A bottle of wine contains more philosophy than all the books in the world.' I would wire up a central phone point, but wouldn't be too concerned about the bedroom if you want to save some money (almost everyone has cordless phones now anway). You could also put another phone point where your PC will be (that's if you can get ADSL). You can then use your wireless router from that. If ADSL is not available make sure you get whatever point you need wired to the spot where your PC stuff will be (cable or satelite) As for TV points (standard TV and foxtel), personally I would put one in each living area, and every bedroom. One day you may change around the living areas, and the kids might want a tv in their room one day. That's how I see it anyway Blog is now up - http://www.jbdave.blogspot.com/ Re: Phone Lines and Internet Connection 4Oct 23, 2009 11:14 am Thanks for your messages guys.... The wireless is suppose to have enough range for the average house. Practically, though, I have found it a little different. We seem to have small "dead spots" around the place, like my son's bedroom and the family room, which are at the other end of the house to the router. It's not that big a house so it isn't a distance issue. So I can say that it will depend on the size of the house, possibly the location of where you want to use it and the quality of the modem and router. It may pay to make sure you have a router that specifies "extended range". Otherwise, at the other end, you can buy boosted antenna to connect to the laptop that's trying to pick it up. i would definitely have another point that's maybe in a room near the centre of the house to make sure you have a more even coverage. Most studies are at one end of the house or other. TV points... everywhere is good ... but if you just can't fit all of them into the budget, remember you can buy amplified internal tv antenna's later from **** Smith, etc for about $50. Just need the power point then... my 2cents...
