Great question.

When we started this business we literally wrote in our business plan that we would aim to build every home to the same standard we would expect for our own families, so yes that means using the best quality materials we reasonably can get hold of for our clients within their budgets.

Also as business owners, we have to give a 6 year structural and waterproofing warranty so if something goes wrong that is literally money we have to pay out of our own pockets, so our philosophy is to get the structure and waterproofing right from the beginning so we don't have to come back later.

We lose quite a few jobs every year to cheaper builders as we insist on using locally sourced materials and suppliers that are backed by local warranties. For instance our tap ware has a 15 year warranty. Yes it would be cheaper to buy container loads of materials from China, but what happens when something goes wrong....who do you call?

In fact I lost 2 x $2m plus jobs this week that I had been working on for over 2 years each to cheaper builders. That feeling really sucks when you have put so much time and effort helping people from buying their site, to helping them find an architect and pricing the job over and over and value engineering it, but some people are happy to go with a cheaper product and that is totally fine.

In the 8 years I have been on this forum I have lost count of the number of forum members builds I have looked at, and the way some builders cut corners to save money is shocking. We joke about the site inspector's videos, but I have seen that and worse, way worse. What some people don't realise until they find out the hard way, is there are usually only 3 reasons why one builder is cheaper than another:

1. They have missed something and have priced the job wrong or they have excluded a lot of items
2. They are using inferior materials and less skilled trades
3. They deliberately price the job lower knowing that once the client is locked in they are stuck and will ask for more money ( this last one is far more common than you think)


So yes I believe we are more expensive than some, and cheaper than others, so we are not for everyone, but as with any product there are people who value quality and that is our little niche of the market and it seems to be going well.
