The high quality sound bars are an improvement over the TV speakers, but I don't think you can beat a 5.1 or even 7.1 setup for modern TV shows and movies. With a soundbar, you miss out on so many of the little details. A classic example is the opening scene in the movie Revenant when they are hunting in the creek. There are so many background noises and running water noises that you simply wont hear. The surround speakers add so much more depth to the experience. So I guess it depends on whether or not you care and are into your audio. A lot of people don't care. But I would wire your room just to future proof it, so at least the cables are there. Wire it for 7.1 ( two cables in the ceiling for above you head in ceiling - I have these in my living room and they are a game changer, especially when listening to live music it makes you feel like you are at the concert). If you can only afford a soundbar now, get one of those and at least the wiring is there for when the budget allows. Re: Traditional Speaker or Soundbar for Media 5May 25, 2024 11:54 am Its a tricky one, but, 5.1 etc.. is the better way to go to get the cinema style experience i feel. We are mid-build, and we had pre wire done for 5.1 surround sound, where we will have two speakers on ceiling in the rear corners and front corners to get all angles, and i believe the other one is also on the ceiling at the front. So its like 3 front 2 back, and then the sub in the back corner where out powerpoint is. We are doing a 120" laser projector setup though, so soundbar may work for a regular TV setup and smaller room size.
