Browse Forums Building A New House 1 Feb 05, 2012 3:54 pm Light cupboards with dark benchtops, or dark cupboards with light benchtops? Which is more of a "classic" look? (cos of our budget- it needs to look good for a long time, LOL). Any comments welcome, thanks! "Classic" kitchen colours 2Feb 05, 2012 4:12 pm IMO, light cupboards with dark benchtop is more 'classic'. Cheers, MP Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 3Feb 05, 2012 5:14 pm I agree, light cupboards with dark benchtop, or both light (white). What a gorgeous house, all the extra touches give it so much character. Will it all look too plain? I don't have the moulding-but have added various bits & pieces in the way of art works etc to add a modern rustic feel... We've gone for black on white as well - Caesarstone Night Sky benchtops and polar white natural cabinetry with a kinda sparkly silver-grey coloured splashback (can't remember the exact color) and oyster grey kickers. Floor tiles are white semi-goss and paint colors are white on white for the ceiling/archs/skirts and limed white quarter for the walls, which softens everything up a bit given that we've got so much bright white everywhere else (we went with polar white natural finish instead of gloss finish on the cupboards and drawers for exactly the same reason). Benchtop/cabinetry combo looks kinda like the last picture in the laminex brochure below: http://www.laminex.com.au/uploads/broch ... oklets.pdf You're never quite sure how it all looks until it is done, but we're hoping it will all work together and look ok. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 12Feb 10, 2012 11:01 pm Well, I really like black tops, especially black granite, but hubby definitely NOT a fan and he shares the kitchen with me! Please comment on my selection so far: Top: formica mineral spa, I'm hoping it has a "soap stone" look? So hard to tell on small sample! Cupboards: Laminex parchment or formica warm white. Gloss white tiled splashback with a big feature tile of roosters ... hoping for modern country feel. It's all quite plain so i'm hoping they will liven it up. Laminex satin heartwood insert panel at the back of the breakfast bar to add warm timber look - hopefully tying in my antique oak dining table and chairs. Kitchen floor: unglazed porcelain, Lava stone, light but quite warm in colour overall. No idea about colour of drawer handles. All my appliances are stainless steel. Should I stick with that? Maybe hogbristle paint for kitchen walls- but I'm not sure how the mineral spa will look with that, it's a bit greyish in some lights. Incidentally, the kitchen will get lots of natural light. There's two windows, one over the sink, the other large north facing with benchtop running along it (no cupboards under, extra place to prepare food/sit. ) Window frames to be pearl white. Feedback welcomed, and sorry if you can't envisage it, I've put some samples on imageshack but am stuck on how to download them here! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 13Feb 10, 2012 11:13 pm On imageshack there should be an option to copy a link for posting the image you are looking at onto a bulletin board (the link will have "IMG" tags in it). Just copy the links for the photos you want to show from your album and paste them in to a forum post here and it should just work. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 15Feb 12, 2012 6:54 pm Okay it's the "moment of truth" in March (prestart) and I have had to rethink everything since my last post. For sake of domestic harmony I have to say Bye bye Classic colours.... sob. I now have Benchtop Formica Cocoa Sand http://img198.imageshack.us/img198/4171 ... oasand.jpg Cupboards Laminex Satin Heartwood http://img585.imageshack.us/img585/5143 ... rtwood.jpg Kicks Laminex bronzeworks, http://img85.imageshack.us/img85/990/br ... gbnat1.jpg and white gloss tile behind splashback. Not sure about dimensions of the white tile yet. 100x100 is classic country but soooo much grout. Quite a change from what I envisaged. My brain has a massive cramp from the paradigm shift Thanks for tip on posting photos but I've just about given up, if they don't show here sorry. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 16Feb 12, 2012 9:52 pm Please show me the rooster, I am chicken mad Your selection sounds great I have the gloss cream 100 x 100 above my hotplate on the diamond then the larger cream 200x 200, then with the girls (chickens) 50 x 200 going around on top of the 200 tiles (or just one tile below) I'm pretty sure it will look good but it is scary choosing colors I think and very hard to explain Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 17Feb 12, 2012 10:13 pm When we we're doing our selections we spent a lot more than we planned and I really resented paying more for a laminate just because it wasn't in our builders standard range. I wanted dark cupboards and a benchtop that wasn't pretend stone look (would have loved stone but could nort justify spending the money). We ended up choosing cocoa sand benchtop and a formica dark grey (can't remember the actual name of it). Out of all of our selectIons I was worried about the kitchen the most because it wasn't what I would have chosen given free range - but I love it and have no regrets. We also had a white gloss large tile splashback. I am on my phone at the moment but will try to post photos tomorrow. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 18Feb 13, 2012 7:41 pm Hi excited, it sounds like you have "the girls" border tile? and this pic is "the boys" in situ off the southern cross ceramics website. http://img513.imageshack.us/img513/2628 ... oseupc.jpg We are also building in SW WA! And my choice for laundry is "the girls"!! I wanted "the cows" originally but they discontinued them. Sad, they were so cute. Lee75, with the new choices I've made the satin heartwood has to be the "star" in the room, a bit worried that I might find the top boring but it's reassuring to me that you don't regret your choice. And I can still add accessories since it's mostly white. It would be wonderful to have a bigger budget but even harder to choose with so much to choose from, lol. Would love to see your pics, thank you! Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 19Feb 14, 2012 2:54 pm I just love the boys, nice choice I have had the girls border in another house a few years ago and just loved them, we tried to not have them this time but could find anything that we wanted. The cows would have looked good, there is not much choice around WA but lots on the Internet. Re: "Classic" kitchen colours 20Feb 14, 2012 8:30 pm We can't seem to find bullnose trims for tiles. They added a lot of character to our border tiles. I hope the pencil trims will be okay, having chocolate pencil trim for the girls and probably an off white for the boys to "frame" it behind the kitchen splashback. (Yes we like our girls, we have Araucana cross polish, and silver and gold bantam wyandottes. Since we are in suburbia at present we only have 12 but we get plenty of eggs. ) Hey.
