Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 24, 2008 9:23 am I've just had half of one of our gutters replaced. The new guttering has the same profile as the old but they used totally different brackets (fixings?) to attach them.
The old ones went from behind, under then up to the top of the front. They used ones that got from behind, under then only part way up and then they have NAILED through the outside of the gutter. Is this a normal practice? They've siliconed the nails where they are over a door but not the others which implies to me they expect it to leak. Cleaning the gutter will be harder with nails intruding and will obviously will stress the hole while cleaning as the nail is bumped. They've also put rivets through from underneath where the gutters join, the old one didn't have that. The join is siliconed from the inside which leaves a raised edge which stops the new bit draining completely. One of the nails has already pulled out (less than a week) and that one is nailed only an inch or so up the side. Not to mention the number of old nails (from under the roof) and unused rivets they left on the roof to wash into the gutters/drains. Advice please, I'm in Canberra. thanks. Re: Attaching roof gutters 2Sep 24, 2008 10:51 am Sorry for replying to myself.
On closer inspection it is a screw not a nail. But it does still go through the side of the gutter relatively low down. This technique cannot last as long as the original "no penetration" style. Re: Attaching roof gutters 3Sep 25, 2008 8:30 am Sounds like a half arsed job to me. Most brackets are pretty easy to come by so I doubt matching them would have been a problem. None of which I know require you to pierce the gutter, except at the mitre (Corner)
