Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Dec 09, 2017 2:57 am Hi, We are getting off the plan apartment. We have just noticed that the bedroom window actually look like sliding doors. I initially thought it must be a mistake but then saw that all apartments have the same sliding door for the master bedroom. I raised this with the builder and was told that this was BCA complaint as they only open 100mm. I was still not sold on this idea as this apartment will on 2nd floor (attached photo shows how the window (its actually a sliding door) will look as they have installed on the first floor apartments. I then raised this with HIA and they said that if this is a bedroom window they the builder should think to make this child resistant. I was given this link by HIA - http://www.abcb.gov.au/Resources/Publications/Education-Training/Protection-of-Openable-Windows Based on the above link I understand that to make it fire safe it should ideally have a child resistant installed (so that the window/door) can be completely removed in case of emergency. In such a case there should be a barrier of 865mm high with no horizontal elements between 150mm and 760mm. So if I read this correctly - it means that the bottom of the window should only start at 865mm high ? I am still not convinced that this can be complaint as they have straight installed a door (you can actually see a handle on the outside with what seems to be a key hole on the outside). Has anyone come across this ? I cant understand who in the right mind has made this compliant for apartments (seriously this is on the 2nd floor). What if someone has small puppy or a cat. I have escalated this via our settlement team so that I can directly talk to the builder. I am not sure if I can get the builder to change this (as they will be doing this for all apartments). Has anyone seem something similar ? Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Thanks. Re: Sliding door instead on sliding window ! 2Dec 22, 2017 10:22 am Camhaw It looks like they intended to have a sliding door with a Juliet Balcony, which incidentally requires a Balustrade.
