Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 10, 2017 2:30 pm Our slab down inspection report came back with the following defect: "Polythene was not visible and the slab edge needs to be waterproofed" We have contacted our builder and are waiting for their response. We are also going to get some advice from the inspector. But has anyone else been in a similar situation? It seems like a pretty big mistake to just forget to lay the polythene vapourproof sheeting under the slab. We dug down the edge of the slab and could not see or feel any sheeting, it is just concrete on sand. Is there any reason they would not put down polythene? Any there other methods of vapourproofing? I am really hoping this is not a major stuff up which will result in pulling up the slab! Any advice appreciated. Re: Slab down inspection defect 2May 16, 2018 9:39 pm Its a must have the plastic is part of the AS 2870 so it sounds like cost cutting once down who is to know, now was that inspected by RBS before slab poring, get the builder to rip it up and start again. Regards. Re: Slab down inspection defect 3May 16, 2018 10:45 pm Firstly, get a copy of the engineers inspection sheet and ensure they are qualified and hold the relevant insurances. Secondly, in 10+ years of inspection slabs (waffle pods), I have never seen one without a membrane. I do believe AS2870 allows for slabs without a membrane but it does require a significant increase in concrete strength and cover to steel. i.e. 32MPa and increases in cover i.e. 20-40mm bottom steel and therefore a general increase in beam depth. If the membrane was required, then generally they leave 500mm or so outside the slab as on a waffle pod in order to comply this gets folded back up into the brick rebate and therefore is clearly visible.
