Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Aug 10, 2017 10:40 am A long story but I've been mucked around by a couple of people by only giving one quote for the two option I would like, of course the more expensive option. I've checked with my local council and I've been told that I don't need an engineer if the builder/designer can get the right information about beams and loads etc. Originally my uncle, who is retired, said although he could do it he wasn't sure if we needed an engineer etc but now that I know I don't, I'd love for him to do it. Can someone please give me the accurate information from the building guidelines for what beams are required for a 4.70m load bearing wall in a brick and tile roofed house. Thank you. Re: 4.70m Load bearing wall beams request 2Aug 10, 2017 11:25 am Home Learner I am afraid that is incorrect the beam needs to be certified There are 2 options 1. Check & Comply with the AS timber codes 2. Have an engineer design the beam If Its a reno then most Councils prefer the Signed Engineering Drawing..even for a single beam BTW if you want specific structural info you need to provide photos and drawings on this forum, etc Designer,Engineer (Civil,Const & Envir),Builder,Concrete & Masonry Contract.Struct Repairs Re: 4.70m Load bearing wall beams request 3Aug 11, 2017 8:35 am Thank you for your feedback. When I phoned council (Kingston, Victoria) two people have both said that you don't necessarily need an engineer for five meters and that it depends if they can get the correct information. I phoned to check as I've had conflicting info about needing an engineer. Do you know why council would say that?
