Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jul 10, 2017 6:13 pm We have just viewed our new frameless glass shower installed by our builder. It was supposed to be one fixed panel of glass & one pivoting (door) panel spanning a 1.6meter ensuite. Instead we have a door between 2 fixed panels and the entire length of the shower, 1.6m, has had a glass shelf about 10mm deep installed at a right angle to the top edge of the shower supposedly for support. I have tried to google frameless glass showers until the cows come home & nothing like this ever appears. It looks cheap and nasty. Our builder just said "its how we do it" & "sound building practice to add support". It just sounds like BS to me. My contract shows a single mark on the floor plan with a split in the middle, the written contract states frameless glass. I discussed what I wanted in depth during the planning stage & was adamant that I wanted free standing glass which I backed up with a number of images. Just wondering if I now have a leg to stand on. I can't help but think I have the strange glass support shelf because the shower glass is maybe an inferior or too thin product. Re: Frameless Glass shower with unwanted support shelf 3Jul 11, 2017 9:13 am I don't have a photo of our shower as we do not have keys yet, & no permission to enter property. This is a photo I found online showing the glass shelf the same as the one our builder has used as support at the top of the shower. Our shower differs from the pic in that it is straight, built across the bathroom & that glass shelf spans the bathroom. In our plans we have a straight line drawn, broken in the middle supposedly where the pivot door meets the fixed panel. As we only wanted two panels we also requested that the door swing into the shower as we knew it would hit the towel rails swinging out. We were not given elevation plans & we did not know they even were a possibility. As the builder does not have pictures of his work, we showed him a photo of what we wanted. He is now claiming this is simply how they build their showers, three panels ( to clear the towel rails on opening out into the room), big chunky clips, & that damn glass shelf at the top. I do remember him suggesting they would use a pole for added support which is why I did my research & told him that the shower I wanted would have panels less than 1200mm and not require additional support according to a number of different shower installers. I then supplied him with a photo of what we wanted. We still have our photocopy of this photo...he has conveniently not remembered ever seeing it. In our written contract it just says frame less glass shower. Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ this is the photo we gave him originally 2 4497 4 3745 |
