Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 May 07, 2017 2:12 pm Commonly used flexible stainless steel braided hoses must be used in accessible areas but many braided steel hoses are used in accessible but closed areas where fumes from stored chemicals can react with the woven mesh, causing rust spots that lead to hose failures. Flexible stainless steel braided hoses with sharp bends when fitted are also more prone to failure. Failures are not uncommon. Flexible stainless steel braided hoses must be WaterMarked but there are numerous non certified braided hoses sold. A plumber fitting a flexible braided steel hose does not guarantee compliance but compliance is not a guarantee of immunity from attack by chemical fumes or longevity. http://www.theage.com.au/business/consu ... vy8l0.html http://www.westernportwater.com.au/faul ... od-damage/ https://www.budgetdirect.com.au/blog/ho ... -home.html 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: WARNING: Flexible stainless steel braided hoses 2May 09, 2017 12:49 pm Thanks a million for this SaveH2O. This is a timely warning as we are coming up to 5 years in this house. We certainly have the flexi hose under the bathroom sink, under the kitchen sink and in both toilet cisterns. And now that I've had a good look one of them is starting to degrade! Another example of leaving homeowners in ignorance Re: WARNING: Flexible stainless steel braided hoses 5May 10, 2017 9:46 am Good point Qeb, it's a minefield. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: WARNING: Flexible stainless steel braided hoses 6May 10, 2017 9:53 am From the articles you posted SaveH2O I am assuming homeowners need to constantly check them and have a plumber change them every 10 years or so. Or maybe you are sold something cheap to start with and it's up to you to pay a plumber to upgrade all your hoses. The latter sounds about in line with present practices in the domestic building industry. Do commercial buildings use the same hoses? Re: WARNING: Flexible stainless steel braided hoses 7May 10, 2017 10:45 am Hi Liliana. I am no expert on this issue but sinks, basins and taps are all similar, regardless of where they are installed. My bathroom and en-suite were renovated 16 years ago and one of the flexi hoses in my en-suite has a largish rust spot and a smaller rust spot, the others appear ok but I can only see the front half of the hoses without using a mirror. I need to buy a small mirror. The hoses are easy to change. 3in1 Supadiverta. Rainwater Harvesting Best Practice using syphonic drainage. Cleaner Neater Smarter Cheaper Supa Gutter Pumper.
