Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 01, 2016 10:07 pm Hi all, I am building a single story house in Melb. Two weeks ago the brick has been acid washed. I did have my concern on the poor finish when the brick was laid but I was more like let's wait for it dry and let's wait for the wash. Now it's been two weeks since the wash u have to say my panic mode is on!! Mortar colour varies and pointing was poorly done. Bumped into my builder and had a chat I was told it's all normal. I am no expert but I think the mortar joint is really bad . please give me your opinion and possible lay what can be done? I really wan my builder to repoint with correct mortar colour and do it properly . Thank you . Re: Brick Work is bad ?? 13Sep 01, 2016 10:57 pm BL35ED Thats really bad! Id be fuming WTF! I know !! Re: Brick Work is bad ?? 16Sep 02, 2016 12:29 pm That's is poor quality! I had a similar problem with a big builder 5 years ago when a particular mortar colour that I paid extra for was discolouring after they washed the bricks! After taking it up with the builder, they said it was no fault of theirs and it was something that we just had to live with! I contacted consumer affairs and got a case number. Only then after presenting our case number with the big builder did they decide to refund us $9,000!! Re: Brick Work is bad ?? 17Sep 02, 2016 1:23 pm Emmz70 How did your inspection go Sun? Hope they rectify this problem real soon!!! Emma , I booked the inspector but the big M hasn't reply my email I sent on Wednesday. I asked them to confirm PCI date. Struggling and really worried . It's shocking that you have to go to consumer affairs for them to fix it. I would say 9000 is not enough. How much will it cost if they have to redo the brick ? I am prepared for more delay on the house . I want them to fix it and I want no cheap and quick fix ! I can see what's coming our way . SM told me it's just normal many times so I can so see few arguments down the track. Re: Brick Work is bad ?? 19Sep 02, 2016 1:55 pm sunxiaoxuan23926 Emmz70 How did your inspection go Sun? Keep pushing for it Sun. Re: Brick Work is bad ?? 20Sep 02, 2016 6:01 pm Definitely not 'normal' and it needs to be fixed. Is the mortar weak? Does it fall away when you run your finger along it? If it seems weak I'd definitely get it tested for strength. This is a company that can do the test and give you a chemical analysis of the mortar and a report with possible solutions if it is incorrect: http://www.sharpandhowells.com.au/featu ... sting.html Appearance wise they need to fix it up. If the mortar isn't weak and it is just a visual defect, I'd push to have it repointed. The other option is to repoint the areas where there are holes, and then have NawKaw colour match ALL of the mortar. I've been quite happy with NawKaw in the past, but I'd be making sure that the mortar isn't 'weak' by having it tested first, as some brickes like to use more sand in the mix than they should.
