Re: How does our builder fix this issue? 21Jun 27, 2016 8:17 pm The Engineer sent an email to the builder stating in his opinion the beam is both external and internal. He recommended that the beam be replaced but then his next in command said it could be treated. So today they got a steel fabricator out and he is now going to sand blast the beam and coat it. I rang our engineer back up and asked what happens to the gal angle that has been wielded to the beam. Will that now be taken off as to treat the entire beam. He said no they will now completely wield the gal leaving no gaps around the edge. Meaning in his opinion if oxygen and moisture can't penetrate behind the gal angle it should all be fine. I have to say we are far from impressed with what is happening at the moment. But that said we have to move forward and fight battles we know we can win and not hold the build up. Re: How does our builder fix this issue? 22Jun 29, 2016 10:45 am By the sounds of it that beam needs to go. Looking at your pictures I can see there is rust and given your location the right thing to do is either send it off to be hot dipped or a new hot dipped beam. If they are telling you it needs to be sandblasted, that alone sends red flags up. What on earth are they playing at. So after weeks of nothing happening we are two steps forward one step back. Great outcome for you and it is as it should be. I come from a background of doing government contracts with architects in charge. If we made a mistake we got a defect notice to pull it up and do it again. there was no argument and nowhere to go but to do it. Domestic builders try and do get away with a blue murder because there is insufficient vigilance in compliance. Instead of wasting everyone's time your builder should have done what he is doing now weeks ago. Cheers for you.
