Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 May 29, 2016 5:42 pm I have had a request to make a staircase without an overhanging nosing ie. square finish riser to top of tread with an anti slip insert rebated into the top of the tread 10mm from the front of the riser/tread. I'm in Tasmania and looking through the building code there doesn't seem to be any specific requirement for the overhanging nosing, just the anti slip nosing. But in my 15 years as a joiner and making stairs I've always been told the nosing overhang is required to comply with the code. So if any oracle out there could shine some light on my issue, that would be great. Thanks Re: Do stair treads require an overhanging nosing? 2May 29, 2016 6:03 pm AS1768 2011 I think (whilst i sit in the takeaway). I've packed all my standards away so I can't check for you at the moment but I think it's 30mm. Using my LG-G4 to bring you this update. Prior to 2013, the nosing of the upper tread had to overhang the rear of the tread below by a min of 10mm. See fig 4.2 (AS1657-1992 - Superseded) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ but now (i.e. 2013 onwards) a gap of up to 30mm is acceptable. See figure 7.2 (AS1657-2013) Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ For your reference: AS1657-1992: Platforms, stairways, etc (SUPERSEDED) Section 4.3.1 Rises and goings, (e) ".....there shall be a minimum overlap of 10mm" AS1657-2013: Fixed Platforms, walkways, stairways and ladders Section 7.2.3.2 Rises and goings "....a maximum gap of 30mm between the rear edge of one tread and the nosing of the tread above" Hope this helps. 2 2937 I'm curious, did they provide any reason why they did not like the idea? 1 14178 |
