I'm guessing nails are not bolts and nails going through the bottom plate into the concrete slab is not an efficient method of fixing the frame to the slab. Another thing to add to the defective list haha ohhh builders make me laugh. Thats not entirely correct. Typically where there is a bracing panel, then bolts or chemical anchors will be required. If it is simply fixing the wall to the slab where there is no bracing or additional tie down required then yes nails through the bottom plate into the slab are all that is required. Buckling 2. Load reversals 3. Fatigue 4. Vibration, stress, shear, bending, excessive defections....etc Correct bracing design is imperative in above cases and in simple cases is dealt with in the codes The Australian Standards requires engineers to check & Certify these, if Designers and builders fail to deal with basic standard code compliance, (eg If the build is not in compliance with AS) then Engineer Certification is required stating that it is equivalent or better than what is required in the code, or provide remedies (fixes) for non-compliance. Sorry, what is bracing panel? Bracing panels are typically ply or fibre cement sheets nailed to the wall frame. They can also be metal straps or angles fixed diagonally to the frame. At each end of the brace the wall needs to be tied down to the slab, this is normally done by screw in bolts, chemically secured bolts or in some cases hardened concrete nails. I've gone for pre-fab walls.
