Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Sep 23, 2015 3:45 pm What, if anything happens to bearers and joists flooring if it receives heavy rain before lockup? Lining is yellowtongue particle (?) board. Is the product wax sealed or something to protect it and how sturdy is that barrier? Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 2Sep 23, 2015 4:02 pm Hey Leksie, as far as im aware, the yellow tongue particle board can sustain a fair bit of exposure to the elements before it gets damaged. If the exposure is prolonged, (for a few months) the builder may need to sand it back before laying down any flooring on it. Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 3Sep 23, 2015 6:35 pm Thanks, yeah I figure it's all good. Someone was going on about it to me and I really just wanted something to throw back at them lol Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 4Sep 23, 2015 7:14 pm Haha do you want something you can physically throw at them? Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 6Sep 24, 2015 6:18 pm Leksie my flooring was out in the elements (read that as massive amounts of rain) for last 5 months. Thankfully we have the roof on now and to be honest it really doesn't look much different than when it was put down. I was terribly worried about it every time it rained ( which felt like everyday!) but I see now my worry was for no reason. Carpenters have assured me it will be fine. We plan on sanding any edges that are not sitting flat before putting down flooring. Hope that eases your mind Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 7Sep 29, 2015 7:13 am gandn Leksie my flooring was out in the elements (read that as massive amounts of rain) for last 5 months. Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 10Nov 02, 2015 4:14 pm Crazyk Yellow tongue flooring has a 3mth warranty against weathering from memory Interesting, thanks for your reply. Would be interested to hear what StewieD thinks on this topic too. Roof should go on 16 Nov, though we are delayed with weather at the moment and it got delayed in the first place due to an issue with our window order. Yeah it's probably about 3ml of water? Custom knockdown rebuild Newcastle NSW viewtopic.php?t=78271 Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 15Nov 04, 2015 6:17 pm Yeah I know it's resin treated or wax coated or whatever, and he said if there is any cupping (haven't seen any) they would sand it back but I don't know I'm getting anxious to see that roof.. It's still well under the 3 months. I might ask the builder what he thinks, we can't get access unless we ask to meet him and go on etc (in which case it's fine). And yes I'm sure they will sand it. Lol who doesn't go on site without permission? Yeah true. Oh totally! There's a big stand of heavy gum trees in a long vacant awkwardly shaped large block behind our block and we used to be able to get through a gap in the fence there. But we got busted and now the gaps are sealed up real good . He was really nice about it but was just like, I'm responsible for the OH + S on site and if anyone gets injured etc.. I've normally got my five month old baby with me so don't attempt any ninja stuff hehe Custom knockdown rebuild Newcastle NSW viewtopic.php?t=78271 Re: Floor lining (bearers and joists) 19Nov 05, 2015 5:01 pm Crazyk Haha. Yeah I forgot your doing a KDR so really only have easy access from the front. Yeah we are lucky with the empty block behind which is easily accessed (we are fine with the owner), it has been empty so long people think it's a reserve but it is actually privately held. However the builder plugged the gap in the fence there. The gum trees on it shade our place very well for now and bring the temps down (yard faces west) but we've got some plans to plant lots of shade for when it eventually gets developed one day.. As someone else said 3 months is the standard warranty for most sheet flooring but I've seen some floors exposed for a lot longer than that without any apparent degradation in the sheets. I know once the roof goes on it will start to dry out but I don't know how those sheets would fare long term. The wax coating also is only a coating on the surface. Drill a hole through to let the water out and you may cause more problems than you are trying to solve. If it saves the rest of your flooring though it may be worth it. Stewie Thanks for all replies.
