See the below excerpt from the Australian Standard. From A.S 3958 “The lippage between two adjacent tiles should not exceed 2 mm. In the case of tiles where the surface has been ground flat for example polished tiles, the lippage should not exceed 1 mm. Lippage, is a condition where one edge of a tile is higher than an adjacent tile, giving the finished surface an uneven appearance. This condition is inherent in all installation methods and may also be unavoidable due to the tile tolerances. Lippage may also be unavoidable where tiles larger than 150 x 150 mm are graded to a waste outlet, unless transverse cuts are incorporated.” [Edit: Advertising links removed by moderator] Re: Are these tiles faulty ?? 3Dec 19, 2014 5:38 am So going by the standard the tiles are ok, as porcelain correct my if im wrong is not a polished tile. Does the builder have a display home? Check out the tiling there if they do, they are required to provide you with a finish equal to the quality of the display home. Porcelain is usually a polished or semi polished tile so the tolerance should be 1mm [Edit: Advertising links removed by moderator] Re: Are these tiles faulty ?? 6Dec 19, 2014 8:47 am kats_meow Can you apply Consumer Law to this issue ie state that you have not got what you paid for? I have asked the 'Building commission' (who have inspected my porcelain tiles and said the tolerance is 2mm), and this is their response, "According to the inspector the tolerance of 2 mm applies to your tiles - tiles that are not ground (polished). The tolerance of 1 mm applies to tiles that have received stone polishing (grinding) down to a level surface. Terrazzo tiles are tiles that are commonly polished. Most domestic floor tiling, such as your tiles, come finished to be installed without the need to polish (grind)." Does it make sense to you? many thanks. building inspector kats_meow Can you apply Consumer Law to this issue ie state that you have not got what you paid for? It's not going to hurt. Get them to do the homework. If they are rectified tiles this is going to be a problem. Not only a trip hazard but also will cast shadows. What grout width did they lay? Re: Are these tiles faulty ?? 10Dec 29, 2014 10:59 am My builder keep saying that the tiles are within tolerance. they have used the grout width 3-4mm, but my contact says it should be 1.5mm still waiting for my builder to response in regards to the grout width. Crazyk Try and bluff your builder. It's not going to hurt. Get them to do the homework. If they are rectified tiles this is going to be a problem. Not only a trip hazard but also will cast shadows. What grout width did they lay? Are these tiles faulty ?? 11Dec 31, 2014 11:22 am Oh call them out on that. Get the smaller grout width. Not only does it look better but less to get dirty. If it's in the contract hold them to it Also, it's fine for them to say it's to standard, but tell them to point to the clause in the applicable standard, then you will be convinced.
