Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Dec 14, 2014 7:46 pm Hi. Wonder if anyone can tell if there's an issue with this. I have a steel frame deck. Where the roof support posts (and the deck support posts) join to the C channel bearer/edge joist, the bearer/edge joists are checked out thus reducing the strength of the C channel. Spans are about 2m but because one of the posts needed to be shifted the end support post to the next one is about 2300mm. Also, the screws that were used to fix the bearer to the post have had part of the head ground off so that it's easier to fit the face border boards. Is this standard practice?? Should there at least be a steel plate joining the bottom of the C channel to the post especially where a joist is right on the cut edge.? https://onedrive.live.com/redir?resid=8A6F7EA45CAB0F6C!106&authkey=!ANE9eRI7LIKSIWs&v=3&ithint=photo%2cjpg Re: Steel Bearer/ Edge Joist to Support Post 2Dec 14, 2014 8:30 pm I assume the screw heads ground were hex heads. If so then it looks like all they have done is grind off the part used to fit in the drill. I wouldn't have a problem with this. With the joist and bearer connections, am I right that the face of the joist and bearer are screwed through into the post? I wouldn't think this is too far different from if they reversed the channel and ran the whole thing past the post and screwed in From my experience working with steel, I think this would still be structurally sound. The only risk might be if they slightly over cut when cutting the flange which may promote a split Re: Steel Bearer/ Edge Joist to Support Post 4Dec 15, 2014 9:25 pm Jimmy234 Thanks AMC. No issues with rust of the ground head over time? I did think of that, but wasn't sure whether you already dealt with it. The grinding and heat put into the screw would promote rust, but so does the heat and filings made from putting screws in. I think the screw holes where the decking boards were screwed would rust out before the head of that heavy guage screw Seconded; we just used these last weekend to build a small deck. They worked perfectly as we have bluestone in the area where we wanted to build so digging down was not… 8 9062 Hi Mrboh Just wondering if you have any BAL or flame zone issues on your block, as getting compliance with BAL requirements whilst doing bearers and joists is tough.
