Thanks for your help Al and Luke. Im a bit restricted on height at the other end and need to go to the minimum beam height to ensure I get a 5 Degree fall for the roofing.
Regards, Greg Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 8Jun 13, 2008 11:04 pm Let me know if you need any help with spans etc Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 9Jun 14, 2008 6:56 am Thanks Luke. Hopefully I will be OK, the book I am using has pretty much all the info I need (Except the minimum beam height). I am re building an old and worn out verandah and am just copying all the previous dimensions, but at the same time I want to make sure who ever built it last time did it correctly.
Regards Greg. Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 10Jun 14, 2008 4:11 pm Generally the biggest difference in replacing an old verandah is the actual material type. Many old verandahs/carports etc. were built using Oregon Pine which since 1995 has been banned from outdoor structual use.
The timber size is generally the same though with treated pine as structual oregon is generally F7 anyway Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 11Jun 14, 2008 4:29 pm Dukekamaya Generally the biggest difference in replacing an old verandah is the actual material type. The timber size is generally the same though with treated pine as structual oregon is generally F7 anyway We used to use Oregon by the mile for everything... but it just no good for outdoors like Luke says. Probally used because it was cheap and plentifull and came in big flitches The biggest pieces from memory where about 600mm wide x 200 deep x probally 30 meters long. great for roof beams and the like..if they where out of the weather Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 12Jun 14, 2008 6:45 pm We have a piece of oregon at work 600mm x 200mm x 4.2m, its about 20 years old - its not for sale though I'm not sure what the owner is going to use it for. Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 13Jun 14, 2008 7:23 pm I seem to remember all our roof beams in our last house were made of oregon. House was build in the late 80's Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 14Jun 14, 2008 9:21 pm Apart from formwork thats about all oregon is used for these days - its dirt cheap too. The stuff we used came from Canada ( I thought) I'm assuming then from that, you need a cool or climate to grow that type of timber, as its a relativily soft timber Best Price Wardrobes Sliding door robes | Walk in robes Deco panel | Mirror | Melamine 26 to 28 Cottage lane Hackham M: 0402 927 376 http://www.bestpricewardrobes.com.au Trade welcome Re: Minimum overhead bearer height on a verandah??? 20Jun 15, 2008 8:32 pm Oregon is actually one of the hardest 'softwoods' and is harder than many 'hardwoods'
Most of the older (better quality) stuff came from Canada and the Pacific north-west of the USA. As well as the plantation radiata pine they grow in NZ they also grow Californian Redwood there.
