Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Oct 05, 2014 10:25 pm Is structural timber given the same rating when turned on its side? I'm building a low level deck, and I've determined the number and position of the bearers and joists using the AS1684 span tables. I'll be using 120x45 joists. I'm extending the deck (and joists) out from a concrete slab, but due to the height between the top of the concrete slab and the bottom of the sliding door, I'll need to turn the joists which are over the slab to minimize the height of the deck (i.e. 45mm above the slab, instead of the usual 120mm). My question: can I keep the joists turned so that the gap between bearer and deck is 45mm? Obviously it would be nice to get a reference to building standards (as I can't seem to find one). Re: Structural timber orientation for deck 2Oct 06, 2014 9:44 am Hi Trayracer Short answer No. The span tables only work if you follow them precisely then the work will be compliant. If you rotate the section 90 degrees then the engineering properties change and the structure becomes Non-compliant, which will require an engineer to design in accordiance to AS1720 Timber structures. Leonardo_23 Re: Structural timber orientation for deck 4Oct 07, 2014 9:30 pm Thanks for the responses. I think I'll just have two decks: one on concrete and one freestanding one. I was going to have separate bearers anyway, rather than attaching a ledger board, since I want to maintain a gap for termite inspection. Leonardo, this is a new build, and yes there is a termite nest 30m away from the house, which we are having nuked tomorrow. Assuming you've modelled the TB8, TB10, TB12, TB2 & J1 joists/LVLs there, it appears as per drawing to me. There maybe should be an additional J1 between TB10 and T12 if… 3 27707 interesting situation what happened after builder issued final invoice? did you list as defect or not does the building surveyor have any responsibility? ie. issuing… 13 39347 |
