Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Aug 27, 2014 10:19 am Hi all. I have a question as to the installation of these beams. How is the usual method, I would rekon that the intermediate beam is under the top plate of the skillion/ cathedral end walls. The AS1684 framing standard is a little vague as to what is required. So please consider a couple of diagrams taken from the standard. I have enlarged it to show the beam configurations Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ Like ⋅ Add a comment ⋅ Pin to Ideaboard ⋅ So from these pics its seems the top plate of the skillion end walls are discontinuos, but that doen't seem quite normal to me. Any thoughts Design from top down to ground , build from ground up Re: Intermediate beam configuration 3Aug 27, 2014 3:18 pm In my house there are raking ceilings and exposed beams. The ridge beams and intermediate beams (300x75mm) are exposed and the top plate of the raking walls goes over the top of the beams. I assume so there is support for the wall linings which go up the raking ceiling (there are no cornices). Re: Intermediate beam configuration 4Aug 28, 2014 2:45 am Ty Beetaloo, do you see the problem with the beam and top plate being drawn wrong. in the figure it shows a dis-continuous top plate, with inter beam over ? Design from top down to ground , build from ground up Re: Intermediate beam configuration 5Aug 28, 2014 8:15 am I would not take those diagrams too literally. I think they have been drawn to show the various timber members, not how to frame a house in detail. The diagram also does not show a top plate over the window lintels. I would have thought it a good idea to run the top plate over the lintels to transfer racking wind loads to the floor & to tie the whole wall together. This should also reduce the risk of the internal wall lining cracking in this area. Before I started my build I went to the local library and borrowed a book that explained, step by step, how to go about DIY building a house in Australia. I can't remember the name of the book now, but I did copy some of the diagrams that I thought would be useful when I was actually building on site. Re: Intermediate beam configuration 6Aug 28, 2014 3:45 pm Ty Beetaloo. Have just had an follow up inspection from council too clear up said problem. First remarks are the drawings in As1684 are wrong. Then the inspector confirmed my first thoughts as to the beam installation , so all is back on track. After raising the issue with the council and being proactive and seeking their advice, and a solution found we /both parties are feeling much better. Especially me as an owner builder, first time around. We are required to have a concrete path… 0 12873 The distance between my DEBs varies from 4.1m at the narrowest to 8.1m at the widest. 5 27310 |
