Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Jul 16, 2014 6:43 pm Hello All, Just wanted to find out how high the weep holes should be. We just got our first home and are quite excited and happy about the same other than the issue of Weep Holes. I have bought this up with the builder, but he has tried to brush me off. In front of the entrance door there is a weep whole which is probably not even 2 cm off the concrete slab. I am a bit worried as it may be a bit of an issue during the rainy days Kindly shed some light and help me out please. Thank you. Re: Weep Holes Height ? 3Jul 16, 2014 7:13 pm Dear Liliana, Firstly let me thank you for your comment it really helps me out. The drive way is concrete slab, the exterior wall has the weep hole which is not even 2 cm off the concrete slabs in height. The weep hole is not under the concrete slab but just merely 2 cm above the concrete slab. I hope i am making sense. Re: Weep Holes Height ? 5Jul 16, 2014 9:19 pm Hi zllauh, Weep holes in walls are very common in the construction of a house. Often when it's been raining or the house 'sweats' moisture will build up behind the bricks. Weep holes enable the water to flow freely from behind the bricks to the exterior of the house so that problems such as moulding etc do not occur. If you are worried about this, it'd be best to get a Licensed Building to check it out. Hope this helps. Although to thoroughly ease your worry, these in-fact are normal weep holes and cannot be covered up as they will then go against AS (Australian Standards) and BCA (Building Code of Australia). Weep holes are reqired immediately above any DPC/flashing at centres no more than 1.2m except above an opening (eg door/window) less than 1m wide or if the external brickwork is weatherproofed (most isn't). In short, there isn't much you can do about the vertical position of the weep holes but one would hope the brickie thought about the horizontal positioning of it. Ref part 3.3.4.3 of the BCA for a full explanation. it depends on the natural ground level, if they excavated their boundary wall needed to be built as a retaining wall.
