Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 May 01, 2014 2:59 pm we just discovered crack in PVC pipe which goes from stormwater drain (from downpipe) into soakwells - we discovered because we had a mini sinkhole where water sucked and eroded earth. The pipe is 80mm and runs along side of house into soakwell. It appeared where it cracked it was less than 200mm under ground level (top of pipe was 200mm from ground level). We had sand there and then compacted it and put cracked red gravel. We are not sure what could have caused it - it could have been faulty workmanship or due to landscaper - I would have thought the PVC pip would have been stronger to resist compacting. Are there standards on depth of these pipes as 200mm seems fairly shallow? I'm thinking of paving or concreting over that eventually - is there a way to ensure the pressure doesn't crack it again (assuming it wasn't a faulty workmanship issue). Bit concerned it could have happened elsewhere. On a related note, we have red gravel along back side of house - is it safe to have gravel next to house - potential drainage issues etc? Under 300mm of sand we're on fairly clay soil. Re: Depth of storm water drainage pipes 2May 01, 2014 3:43 pm Lines to be a minimum of 100mm under soil: 50mm under paved or concreted areas 100mm under unreinforced concrete or paved driveways 75mm under reinforced concrete driveways. Re: Depth of storm water drainage pipes 3May 01, 2014 5:27 pm ausdesign is correct. Unusual that they used an 80 mm DWV pipe. What State are you in? I'm guessing W.A. I would assume that a pipe draining to a soakwell still comes under stormwater regulations. The minimum pipe size for stormwater compliance is DN90. 3in1 Supadiverta. Re: Depth of storm water drainage pipes 4May 01, 2014 5:58 pm Sorry - I assumed it was 80mm at first glance, I should measure it properly.
