Browse Forums Building Standards; Getting It Right! 1 Apr 06, 2014 2:57 pm We'd like to add a carport to the front of our garage, but are having trouble deciding what shape would best suit the house. Looking for suggestions please. This is the house: https://picasaweb.google.com/lh/photo/ApD4FSFqQt987foKFPR6Hi8sQcyQVFm_wH_YTN750eE?feat=directlink (yes, that IS a pink roof!!) Thanks in advance, Al Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 2May 28, 2014 10:36 am We're in the throes of getting a "fly-over" roof at the back - I've seen people use them as car ports. But, wouldn't a standard rectangular car port suffice. Maybe using wood for the posts - for the look ? Not sure any carports really are that nice to look at - unless money is not an issue. Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 3May 29, 2014 11:22 am From an aesthetics point of view, get something with a roof that matches the pitch of your house roof. Fllat skillion roofed carport out the front of a house always look daggy to me. Have you checked your local town plan? you may or may not, be in an area where design is somewhat dictated to you Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 4May 29, 2014 12:20 pm I think it'd be fine with a standard flat double carport roof. It wouldn't look out of place on that era of house and anything else would be over capitalising and stick out like sore thumb (IMO). Unless you're planning to render and fancy the house up a bit later, then that's a different story. I'm with EmyN on this one , but only with a full laser light sheeting in light grey to match the roof, plus no if any rusty water drips on your cars when it rains, from screws and holes in colourbond rusting or condensation drips long term. Even aluminium frame work ? TY wobbly Design from top down to ground , build from ground up Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 6Jun 03, 2014 3:26 pm EmyN I think it'd be fine with a standard flat double carport roof. Neither of us know the market for the suburb that the OP lives in, so you couldnt say it is over capitalising or not. If it is a well to do suburb that attracts upper middle class buyers, it would certainly pay to spend a few extra thousand to get a matching gable roofed carport. IMHO matching roof lines always look better because the carport then integrates better with the silhouette of the house. Street appeal is a big selling point for better quality houses, and people do pay more for that. I suggest the OP talks to a real estate agent if you have any concerns about resale value. If you're not selling, so they should give you impartial advice. Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 7Aug 02, 2014 7:29 am Hi Alison, Unfortunately council will want to see a matching design to the house roof for street-scape concerns, As the carport will be front of house, council will want it NOT to detract front the house or property itself and not to have a negetave impact on houses surrounding. I would say that council will want to see a hipped style gable roof at best, a gable style roof at worst. As you can't get pink roof sheets, A neutral colour like Paperbark would be desired by the council. Best of luck... steve@everlastpatios.com.au www.everlastpatios.com.au Re: Carport Design Ideas?? 8Aug 06, 2014 10:45 am SteveD Unfortunately council will want to see a matching design to the house roof for street-scape concerns, As the carport will be front of house, council will want it NOT to detract front the house or property itself Without knowing the OP's address, you can not say that with any accuracy. IF you live in a character overlay area, yes its highly likely there will be rules about it, otherwise probably not. I would say both styles you have pictured are steel. The lower chord of the first pic would be a massive lump if made using timber considering the size of the rafters.
